One of the basics of NATO is an agreement to stand together against any nation that attempts to annex territory by force.

Turkey could have talked to fellow NATO allies and set up a defense force to protect Turkey's southern border, but they didn't. It's all too obvious that they want to aggressively attack Kurds, and don't want other people in the way. The WH knew this, too. By pulling our troops out of N. Syria we signed the Kurds death certificates.

Well, yes, but I was referring to ICant's "Turkey determined it was in their best interest to create a buffer zone."

"Not in MY neighborhood" saith Turkey. "Let's put it in YOUR neighborhood" saith Turkey.
NOTE: the buffer zone is to be land taken from Syria that is the home to the Syrian Kurds.

Hi Dr
DrJones writes: cause they need the manpower to fight the Turks/evacuate their own people. Let me think about this. The Kurds have been guarding these captured prisoners for many months and maybe even years for some. They are going to release them and hand them a AK47, and ammunition and say come fight with us? Now that really sounds like a great deal for the ISS fighters.
DrJones writes: but you can stand by and let them get slaughtered after they fought for you. So brave, so honorable. I know the turks and kurds have been killing each other for the last 40+ years and possibly all the way back for 3,000 years. They just took breaks now and then. So it was either leave them to resume their fighting or go to war against Nato. Do you have a better solution? Hi Jon
JonF writes: Alliance with the Kurds and alliance with NATO/Turkey are not incompatible. Since the Kurds and Turkey have been at war with each other for the past 40+ years how are they compatible? They could get together and make peace but that would mean abandoning a family feud. Not a chance God Bless"John 5:39 (KJS) Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."

no they (the kurds) are going to stop guarding the camps and go to fight the Turks. How long do the think the camps will remain secure once the guards leave? The ISIS fighters will regroup and return to their ways.
So it was either leave them to resume their fighting or go to war against Nato. false dichotomy.
Do you have a better solution? I mentioned it in a previous post: Don't tell Turkey it's ok to invade the Kurdish areas. Leave the troops there as a trip wire force. Take the time to actually consult with the military and diplomatic people who know things and try to work out a deal. Trump is supposed to be a great negotiator but his solution to this problem is to walk away and let the turks slaughter the kurds after they did most of the dirty work fighting ISIS.It's not enough to bash in heads, you've got to bash in minds soon I discovered that this rock thing was true Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet All of a sudden i found myself in love with the world And so there was only one thing I could do Was ding a ding dang my dang along ling long - Jesus Built my Hotrod Ministry Live every week like it's Shark Week! - Tracey Jordan Just a monkey in a long line of kings. - Matthew Good If "elitist" just means "not the dumbest motherfucker in the room", I'll be an elitist! - Get Your War On *not an actual doctor

Wow, you have very limited intellectual capacity. They are going to take the guards away to fight for their lives and abandon the ISIS fighters to do as they will.
So it was either leave them to resume their fighting or go to war against Nato.
False dichotomy.
Do you have a better solution?
Yes. Continue to support them. Edited by JonF, : No reason given.

You really can't see how we can work with both? What have we been doing? Edited by JonF, : No reason given.

And just how many hundred years would you suggest we prepare to keep troops there?
As long as we do for our other allies, and maybe longer.

I'd like to be the first to offer my condolences to President Trump for being bested in his quest for the Nobel Peace Prize by Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian prime minister who ended the standoff with Eritrea. How could this single measly accomplishment have outshone:

One thing you can hand to Trump is that he never just sits back and rest on his laurels. He continually strives to come up with ever more egregious misdeeds, each one even worse than the last. Edited by dwise1, : Minor grammatical correction

True. His supporters would be disappointed if he didn't. If he did something decent, he'd become part of The Evil Establishment, and not One Of Us.
Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?
