buzsaw,
Using terms like "sunrise" and "sunset" doesn't make one a geocentrist. They are just figures of speech based upon perspective. Similarly, saying "crescent moon" doesn't mean that you believe that the moon has suddenly lost the bulk of its mass. Verzem

I don't see a lota the usual supernatural debunkers here a refutin. Must be this's quietened them a bit with thoughtful contemplation. Of course Nosey just couldn't resist.
I was thinking that one reason a lot isn't coming out on this significant story, other than it's secularly unpopular would be that reporters are about as interested in a visit to this place as they would be to visit a haunted house. Maybe they're afraid their clothes, purse or expensive photography equipment will ignite?? NASA and government agencies spend cajillions of $$ exploring for life in the universe. Why aren't they interested in the possibility of other dimensions of science/life right here where they can observe it very inexpensively?? THAT'S IT!! Not enough tax $$ involved. Of course!

Similarly, saying "crescent moon" doesn't mean that you believe that the moon has suddenly lost the bulk of its mass. 1. The Bible often used figures of speech. After all, it was written for the man on the street, not the 21st century AD physicist. 2. I would imagine that the astronomists of the day understood the basic implication of the crescent moon. It shouldn't be all that hard to figure out.

I doubt that any reporter is truly afraid to visit Sicily, unless that fear is related to the mafia.
The fact that reporters aren't flocking to investigate this suggests to me that they give the story no credence. As I said before, this sort of silliness comes out of Sicily from time to time. The people there are not generally well-educated. The mafia controls prosperity and probably the dissemination of information as well. I don't think it's surprising that Sicilians are ready to believe this sort of supernatural nonsense. Do you honestly believe that NASA is ignoring this for tax reasons?

buzsaw,
The difference being that back then, they believed they were being literal and accurate and so, it wasn't just a figure of speech for them. Nowdays, we know better. NOW, it is just a fugure of speech. Not then. Verzem

And when the above is used to point out how silly it would be to take the Bible literally on details of physics, geology or biology what is your response?

quote: Heheheh... beat me to the punch on that one. However, let's not let this sidetrack into harping on the issue of Biblical literalism. Does anyone have any info regarding the phenomena listed in these articles? Right now they have been set out as unexplained phenomena. We can remain sceptical, but it might be nice to have some evidence to support our scepticism. holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. Bros)

I don't think there needs to be any additional evidence to be sceptical. This isn't all that unusual a kind of occurance. At the moment all we have is some general media reported stories of local so-called 'eye witnesses'. A sceptical view that waits for more information before deciding anything is the only reasonable one for now. I think that one of two things will happen: 1) We will hear nothing more about it for one of a couple of reasons:a) No one will look into it further. There will be no new occurances and it will just fade away. b) It will prove to be a hoax but reporting this is boring so it won't get reported. 2) Some credible, independent individual will explain what happened. This will be given some coverage so we will hear about it. However, the conspiracy theorists will continue to claim that it happened and that it was caused by anyone of a number of things, including but not limited to, demons, UFOs, angels and Psi-capable humans.

But doesn't it leave you a bit nervous as to a coming judgement and your rejection of prophetic scripture evidence given for responsibility to the Biblical god?

as to a coming judgement No, not any more than I am nervous about not having the coins to pay the ferryman. This has been "coming" for a very long time. It isn't going to be anytime soon.
