Re: Heritage Foundation Senior Analyst on the deficit and Natoinal Debt
Faith writes:
He makes it clear the problem is spending, and not discretionary spending such as on the military, but the mandatory spending on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
And, as has been explained to you repeatedly, that is simply not true.
Social Security and Medicare are funded from a Trust Fund and by law they cannot spend any money not already in the Trust Fund. They cannot by law run a debt or contribute to the deficit.
Learn the basics so you will know when folk like the Heritage Foundation are simply telling more porkies.
Medicaid is funded jointly by the Federal and the States and is NOT a fixed cost. The Feds pay a percentage of the Medicaid costs and the States must fund the balance. You can actually see what the Federal share is by state at this link.
Stop taking the snake oil.

Related to Medicare and Social Security
A more honest appraisal is that Trump and today's Republicans would like to raid the funds in the Social Security and Medicare Trusts to steal those funds to pay for their stupidity and greed.

They are liars when they market totally false, verifiable and actually very basic information. They lie because they know you are too gullible and deplorable to actually check the facts.

But once again, Social Security does NOT add to the deficit. To say it does is simply not true.

No Phat, they can and do touch those expenses. They just changed the benefits retirement age brackets not too many years ago, they can do so in the future and they can also change how the payments are indexed to inflation.

Regarding the drawing down of the Social Security trust funds (the retirement trust fund is expected to be exhausted by 2035), there are three ways to fix it:
Increase the Social Security payroll tax. This would place an undue burden on future workers.
Increase the birth rate, currently at 1.8 (replacement rate is 2.1). This is very unlikely to happen.
Increase immigration dramatically.
There is a simpler, fairer and faster fourth solution. Simply remove the Social Security Tax Limit.

Re: Heritage Foundation Senior Analyst on the deficit and Natoinal Debt
And the actual tax rate is also subject to adjustment.
But of all the issues out there funding Social Security and Health Care are really among the trivial ones. Almost every other developed nation has solved those issues long ago.
Once again the US suffers from NIH (Not Invented Here) syndrome.

Re: Who's Worse: Trump or Pelosi
I saw Pelosi's behavior as petty and that she came across as playground reaction after Trump snubbing her when he presented the text.
But both were pretty much childish.

Re: Joe Walsh is Running for President
It was an assigned reading back when I was in the 8th or 9th grade IIRC. About the same time 1984 and Animal Farm and Words in Thought and Action were mandatory reading.

Paying down the National Debt, improving society begins with education
Theo writes:
What term should be used? Instead of coming up with inaccurate words maybe we should actually educate people about what terms like capitalism and socialism mean.
Can I get a BIG AMEN!
We have utterly failed in the task of educating citizens in the US and unfortunately one of the biggest causes has been STEM. The goal of education should not be just training workers. When we concentrated on that we threw out the humanities as well as all civic education and yet expect our voters to be able to make reasoned fact based decisions.
Ain't gonna happen!
