Joseph Shabalala, Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder, dies aged 78 | Music | The Guardian
As we have connections to South Africa we have developed an affinity to the music of the townships. We were able to see him and his group perform while were in SA.
He and his group Ladysmith Black Mombazo first came to prominence in the USA through Paul Simon's Graceland album.

Katherine Johnson has died
Katherine Johnson has died.
A person that fully deserved and earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom
quote:
When asked to name her greatest contribution to space exploration, Katherine Johnson talks about the calculations that helped synch Project Apollo’s Lunar Lander with the moon-orbiting Command and Service Module. She also worked on the Space Shuttle and the Earth Resources Satellite, and authored or coauthored 26 research reports. She retired in 1986, after thirty-three years at Langley. I loved going to work every single day, she says. In 2015, at age 97, Katherine Johnson added another extraordinary achievement to her long list: President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor.

Re: Katherine Johnson has died
I just finished reading a book about Apollo 8, the first trip around the moon. What an amazing accomplishment, thanks largely to the "hidden figures" like Katherine Johnson.

I've got the movie "Hidden Figures" on my Amazon video page. Very inspiring story. Nice she lived so long.

Re: Max Von Sydow, 90
Great actor.
He brought gravitas, somehow combined with fun to whatever role he played. Hence he could raise something like Escape to Victory to something a lot more than it would otherwise have been, and still make something like The Seventh Seal the amazing piece of work it is.
A genius with very little pretension. Rest in peace.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: Max Von Sydow, 90
I haven't seen that film for ages. The script writers didn't do Robert Howard's character justice I have to say. But I'll dig it out again, to honour Max :-)

Kenny Rogers Dies At 81
NPR writes:
Country music icon Kenny Rogers, whose hits included "Lucille," "Lady" and "The Gambler," died late Friday at his home in Sandy Springs, Ga., his family said in a statement. He was 81.
The Houston-born country star had 20 No.-1 hits and three Grammys and performed for some 60 years before retiring from touring in 2017 at age 79, according to the Associated Press.
Rogers didn't write most of his hits and often said he didn't consider himself much of a songwriter. But he told NPR in 2012 that he had a knack for picking songs that could draw in the listener.
I always liked him.
