The Sociological Implications Of Covid-19
Apallin Spallin! I finally corrected that glitch!
Anywho, the stock market rebounded 800 points today, but many analysts see it as a "dead cat bounce" since there is as yet no vaccine available for the virus. My intuition tells me that the fears are overblown, as you pointed out that influenza itself (with a vaccine) still kills far more people, but with the apparent mismanagement from the current administration, this epidemic may claim many otherwise avoidable deaths before having run its course.
The markets were overdue for a correction anyway, and I would say that financially speaking, wait a couple of months and buy Apple Stock. That company isn't going anywhere and once we get hit with an electromagnetic pulse event, which is likely within the next 20 years, everyone will have to buy a new i-phone anyway.
Some of these headlines are strange! It seems that Headlines themselves have become Bumper Sticker Fodder.
Coronavirus Augurs a World of Pain for Stock Market Whiz Warren Buffett
And
Dow Roars Higher Because Trump Won’t Let This Market Crash.
I remember a few years ago when you taught me that the modern-day media is geared towards infotainment and selling news. This very site that i got these two headline quotes from seems to be in that very business. So let me see what the Washington Post and Time Magazine have in the way of today's headlines:
How is the coronavirus outbreak going to end? Here’s how similar epidemics played out.
A good article in the Washington Post! Some excerpts:
quote:
As stock markets plunge, travel is disrupted and new coronavirus infections are diagnosed across the United States, one question on everyone’s mind is how the outbreak is going to end.
No one knows for sure, but virologists say there are clues from other similar outbreaks in the recent past. Here are the three most relevant scenarios:
  • Health officials get control of the coronavirus through strict public health measures. (they say this would be the ideal outcome.)
  • Coronavirus hits less developed countries, and things get much worse before they get better. (They cite the Ebola Virus as an example, though saying that Covid-19 is spread easier. Apparently washing one's hands and guarding against respiratory contact make a big difference, as AZPaul3 pointed out.
  • The new coronavirus spreads so widely, it simply becomes a fact of life.
This is in essence what happened with the 2009 H1N1 outbreak, also called swine flu. It spread quickly, eventually to an estimated 11 to 21 percent of the global population. The WHO declared it a pandemic, and there was widespread fear.
H1N1 turned out to be much milder than initially feared, causing little more than runny noses and coughs in most people. And H1N1 is now so commonplace, it’s simply seen as a part of the seasonal flus that come and go every year among the global population.
Early estimates on the fatality rate for H1N1 were much higher than the roughly 0.01 to 0.03 percent it turned out to be. Still, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that H1N1 killed 12,469 people in the United States during that first-year period from 2009 to 2010, infected 60.8 million cases and caused 274,304 hospitalizations. The true number is hard to ascertain because many who die of flu-related causes aren’t tested to see whether it was H1N1 or another flu strain. As context, the seasonal flu has killed at least 18,000 people in the United States so far this season, according to the CDC.
One reason H1N1 is a particularly good parallel, epidemiologists say, is because while it had a lower fatality rate than SARS or MERS, it was deadlier because of how infectious and widespread it became.
Not to be alarmist, but another possible parallel might be the 1918 Spanish flu, which had a 2.5 percent fatality rate, eerily close to what’s estimated for the coronavirus.
CDC calls Spanish flu the deadliest pandemic flu virus in human history," because it infected roughly one-third of the world’s population and killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide. Spanish flu, however, was deadly to young and old, while coronavirus has proven to be most lethal to the elderly and left young people relatively unscathed.

  • The politics behind all of this contrast a government that actually cooperates with the WHO and the CDC and the other global experts and is proactive at containment. If Trump and Company worry more about manipulating the media in order to save their precious stock market, it could result in more deaths in the long run. Perhaps there is an evil conspiracy and perhaps they want a bunch of us old people to die and get out of the way for their heirs to inherit the earth of the future. Just a random conspiracy thought.

One recent headline I saw was predicting 100,00 to 500,00 over age 60 folk might die.
We yes, us old farts do tend to die. In fact I am already over the average life expectancy for a male in the US. Fact; old farts do have issues with respiratory problems.

    You are older than 76?
    quote:
Male: 76.1 years - Average life expectancy of a US male (at birth).
Heck im only 60, but with my diabetes, sleep apnea, and complications, I will be fortunate to make the expectancy. It is a sobering thought, but I think what's also on my mind is having run the best race that I can run by the time I reach my own finish line.
That's why you and ringo get to me, sometimes. I don't want to believe the evidence that you present, and I still think we might be in a sort of spiritual dynamic which will never be evidenced before the fact, but I don't dismiss you guys 100% either.
I want to not only live as long as possible but to live long and prosper.
I don't yet worry about Covid-19 though my intuition says that it will affect a lot of people before its all over.

But what the Millennial's dont factor in is the idea that we will have to burn up our inheritence attempting to outlive the virus and that they may end up with nothing anyway.

The drying effect of alcohol is a problem but ...
Yes, additional treatment would be needed and is provided.
I asked my daughter-in-law, a physician's assistant, about what is used in hospitals:
    quote:
For health care settings, alcohol concentration to kill bacteria is 70% to 95% so there is ethyl alcohol as well as emollients and moisturizers to help improve skin health. Also no fragrances or dyes help lessen irritation.
Products with alcohol concentrations as low as 40% are available in stores so you can use those to also avoid drying of the hands.
No product names, but some ingredient ideas of what to look for.
Of course, there'a also the factor of these products becoming unavailable (if not already) because of the panic starting to set in. Reports from multiple CostCo stores are that they're swamped with customers buying up all the food and supplies they can. My niece in the Seattle area reports emptied shelves in Target and other stores; eg, " there were some odd things gone like all the Lunchables LOL".
And everything or anything that could serve as a face mask has been sold out; a construction company owner/foreman tried to buy dust masks for his employees and every store was sold out. Early reports of how the economy and the stock market would be affected pointed out that just about the only stock that was up was 3M, who produce face masks and filters.
Apparently, people think that they can hole up in their homes for months. The Mormons already have a leg up on them on that with the doctrinal requirement to have enough supplies to survive for two years.

At the Safeway, I work at we were swept clean of hand sanitizer and facemasks, even though those paper facemasks are reportedly ineffective.
Let's watch this map change as we all learn about this potential health issue:
    (3/3/2020)
    US Cases so far:
    Travel-related 22
    Person-to-person spread 11
    Under Investigation 27
    Total cases 60

    Desparately seeking a silver lining!
Will this resolve the problems with Social Security and Medicare funds being depleted by 2034 (or whatever the new estimate is)?

    Stocking up
Well, I had hand sanitizer on my shopping list. Scratch that for the near future I guess. Fortunately I have some on hand, also various disinfectants and soap etc. If we have to hole up for months I'll run out of food though.
My sister just wrote me that their Costco in So. Calif. had long lines and were running out of everything too.
Radio has been airing a warning about the uselessness of the masks since most of us misuse them, and say medical personnel are being deprived of them because of the run on them in the stores.
I'd like to think we'll be so overprepared so early we'll just stomp the thing dead in its tracks.
I'm certainly in the age group that isn't supposed to handle this sort of virus very well, but I can only do what I can do and pray. Quite a few at EvC pushing the age boundaries too, but I bet I'm at the top of the range. I'd prefer to be taken out by the Rapture of course.

Good to know. Have the alcohol but no aloe vera gel. Coconut oil though, that should do, just can't blend them together. But there's still soap and water you know.
