Why? Why can't you be inspired by a character in a book? Isn't it really the idea that inspires you, that you believe in, not some random character who happens to articulate the idea?

Frodo would be a better character to compare with Jesus. Many people
do believe in Frodo. They don't believe he actually existed but they do believe that a little guy can do what seems impossible, that he can do the right thing just because it has to be done.
