I’m sorry, but no. Had he apologised properly, I might have some level of respect, but he came up with the same old bullshit about being taken out of context.
Autism is a genuine and serious, life-limiting condition. To dismiss it like he did makes him a shit, pure and simple.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Interesting you have such a high regard for Savage. I vacillate between thinking he's the greatest spokesman there is on some subjects and getting so frustrated with him I can't stand to listen another second.
He's the only one who says what needs to be said about the homeless living in tents on the streets of our big cities. Others may sort of lament it from time to time but Savage gives clear instructions about how we should deal with them. I don't want to get into a huge discussion of this here so I won't quote him but on some subjects like this one I'd vote for him for President. I do expect him to have some good advice about strengthening immunity for this pandemic but I haven't got very far into the book yet. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

When did he say it? How do you know he wasn't taken out of context?

Extract from his Wiki entry:
Autism In July 2008, Savage said that the increasing rate of autism diagnoses was the result of "a racket" designed to get disability payments for "poorer families who have found a new way to be parasites on the government." He returned to the subject on his July 16, 2008, show with the following remarks: Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot." In July 2008 the progressive pressure group Media Matters for America picketed the studios of WOR in New York, along with parents of autistic children. WOR issued a statement saying, "We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners." Also that day, the insurance company Aflac pulled its advertising, and the Supertalk Mississippi radio network dropped Savage's program, replacing it with The Dennis Miller Show. Later that evening, Savage devoted his entire three-hour program to the subject, taking calls from parents who took issue with his comments. On that show Savage stated that his remarks had been "ripped out of context" by "far left Stalinists" who want him off of the air. He appeared on Larry King Live with Glenn Beck as the substitute host for Larry King, and said that the real issue he was commenting on was the overdiagnosis of children due to pharmaceutical companies' drive to drug children for higher profits. On July 25, 2008, Autism United advocates gathered to announce that several advertisers, including RadioShack, Sears, The Home Depot, and DirectBuy, will discontinue their support for Savage's show. Savage's syndicator, Talk Radio Network, responded by releasing a lengthy statement, along with a selection of 20 audio clips drawn from Savage's discussions of autism, to show that the comments were taken out of context.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

So as of now we have to wear masks to board public transportation or enter any of the shops which are still permitted to remain open. As of tomorrow it will be required to wear masks to go outdoors.
Our 'masks', however, are allowed to be anything. You can wrap a scarf round your face, as long as your nose and mouth is covered. Obviously this is not what you'd need if you were a medical professional going into a contagious environment, but any kind of mouth covering is going to block a portion of droplets, some containing viruses. And the whole point of all these regulations is to slow transmission so as not to overwhelm health services. Another possible reason is simply to discourage people from going outside as much, for the same reason. I'm getting concerned about how long this state of emergency is going to go on, especially since the rules and restrictions get progressively stricter almost every day. You mentioned in an earlier thread the economic impact - this is going to be devastating for a lot of businesses, including many who employ low wage workers. There have been some steps taken to mitigate the impact (interest and repayments have been frozen on most loans and mortgages, for example), but there are several self-employed people who have simply not earned any money for the past week. 'Self-employed', of course, includes many people who are in reality employed; but without the legal protections of a contractual wage-earner. How long can they all manage this?

You mentioned in an earlier thread the economic impact - this is going to be devastating for a lot of businesses, including many who employ low wage workers. The travel, tourism, restaurant/bar and also transportation-related businesses will take a hard hit. Like you said, many low wage and part time workers will get hit. I can't say I am overly confident on the stimulus measures. A little extra money might help. But only for a very brief period. Sadly, my guess is this will play out as most downturns/recessions have played out. Unemployment rises and many low wage workers will be without work. Many small businesses will likely shut their doors. Larger businesses and corporations will of course be affected any many will have layoffs. But for the most part, they have enough cash and reserves to weather the storm. And of course, rich folks will just get richer, as always. Most have enough that they don't need to sell on the downswing and they also have adequate cash resources to buy the dips. So as always, they will get richer and the little guy will get sqeezed.

I'm sorry vimesey I can't get through that whole quote and only pick up bits of it. I still think maybe he was taken out of context but I can't tell.

We are often (like nearly daily) required to make quick judgements on information we may see or hear. Most of the time we won't invest much in arriving at our judgement. We simply have better things to do that invest in research.
For this, reason we can use some simple rules of thumb to make quick judgements. One of mine is:If "immunity" is touted in the description of some elixar, exercise or whatever you won't be wrong most of the time if you assign it to the "quackery" pile. "Enhancing immunity" is used in advertising because it is difficult for the FDA or real doctors to charge you with fraud. It is a cloudly claim. So when no time is available discard anything making such claims.

And when you see that some supplement supports a healthy immune system, just walk away.

If it's being sold in the store with that kind of hype on the label I ignore it. But that doesn't mean there aren't things we can be doing to strengthen our immune system, but it does take some reading up on it.

My brother had a doctor's appointment today and I happened to talk to him while he was in the waiting room. He said he was greeted at the door by a nurse in hazmat gear who took temperatures and asked some questions before letting anyone into the office, and all the staff are wearing masks.
I'm pretty much always at home anyway so this isn't any big change to me, but I feel like we're all just waiting for something to happen, something big maybe, a super increase in the cases or something like that. But nobody knows, we're just waiting. The whole economy could come undone, very serious things could happen to everybody apart from the virus, we're just waiting.

Whole State of Nevada is closed, including casinos, all nonessential businesses and services etc.
Just got a notice that all the socializing areas in my apartment building are now closed, the office is also closed and staff can only be contacted by phone or email and personal contact is limited to appointments only. Heard that Costco is almost completely stripped of everything now, including all bread, that's one long long aisle. Nephew reports that he went to get something at the local sporting goods store and there was a line around the block to buy .GUNS. Good grief, isn't this a time for us to be coming together and taking care of each other? (My brother quipped he guesses they expect to have to defend their stock of toilet paper). Times are getting maybe just a little too interesting.

Back in 2017 the Obama staff gave a briefing to the incoming Trump staff including the issue of a potential pandemic. Here is a link to a summary of that briefing including the key points raised.
This was, I repeat, in 2017. Now remember, il Donaldo fired or drove away a significant number of the people who attended the briefing.
Edited by jar, : add first part of briefing images

And the talking point is still that this is unprecedented and unexpected and we need a WARTIME President who knows how to get things done.
Shit gang. Ebola happened. SARS happened. H1N1 happened. 1918 Spanish Flu happened. The Spanish disease happened. Smallpox happened. Typhoid happened. The Black Death happened. AND the briefing happened. And this is unprecedented and unexpected and we need a WARTIME President who knows how to get things done???????????????????????????????????????
