Re: Paying down the National Debt, improving society begins with education
Disagree, strongly. You've moved onto a different planet, jar.
You can't teach core STEM curriculum without teaching critical and creative thinking skills. Science and mathematics require the mental discipline of critical thinking and technology and engineering require the creative juices that comes from critical thinking.
The more scientists we make from our schools the more critical of political and social bullshit this society will become.

Re: Paying down the National Debt, improving society begins with education
Then you are not looking and not talking with the kids. My experience is quite different. When I was there I had a good chemistry teacher and a most inspiring physics teacher. I can see where a lot of kids I talk with are getting interest. Given the politics of local schools, low pay and too large classes, it is not easy, but, at least they are being exposed to other than the three Rs and the fluff of glorified babysitting.
It is not STEM that is the social problem in this society. It is the constant blare of a biased media.

Dj vu is a powerful mental shock to an old one with a fragile mental constitution.
It took me longer than I care to admit to realize I had already seen this and gave you a cheer for it. I get enough of these shocks without you conspiring to give me more.
Here. Take your second cheer and let me alone.

Re: Is the Cure Worse Than the Disease?
We have all seen the flatten the curve graphic and assume we know what it means. But there is a devil in its details. If we are successful in flattening the curve we will have spread the peak of the infection rate so as to not overwhelm our healthcare capacity. This is a good thing but it comes at, what could be, an enormous cost by lengthening the economic hit to be suffered. The longer we can flatten the curve the more people/businesses will fall into economic distress and bankruptcy.
Numbers I’ve seen indicate that in the USA the steep rise in infection rate is matching that seen in Italy and will overwhelm our domestic healthcare capacity by mid-April with, maybe, another 60 days of increasing exponential growth in the infection rate before it peaks in June. But that is not where infection stops. That is where the rate of increase peaks. Thousands, then hundreds, of new cases will continue *daily* for another 3-4+ months.
We can flatten the curve to (hopefully) keep the peak rate from overwhelming our healthcare capacity but, without a vaccine (still 12-18 months away and another 12-18 months to effectively distribute into the bulk of the population), that will push thousands of new infections every month well into 2021+.
So, how long can we socially distance our entire society and at what cost? At what cost if we don’t?
The entire world will suffer a protracted economic recession in the next 6 months with (classic) economic depression looming in the future (maybe). The good news is the rent on my apartment will probably not increase this next January if I’m still here.

Re: The Administration is out of control
To end this pandemic in the US all we need to do is stop testing and stop reporting.
And this would provide additional employment opportunities.
First, we would need additional backhoe operators. Then communities would need to stockpile lime like we now do with road salts. Finally, we could hire those with pickups and flatbed trucks to periodically canvas neighborhoods collecting bodies.

Sorry. Can't lay this one on The Orange Bastard.
Nigeria has had this thing for Chloroquine and COVID-19 for more than a month now.
Nigerians React To Use Of Chloroquine For Fighting Coronavirus — Guardian Life — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News
Started with Chinese reports.
I don't know if I would trust South China Morning Post on this one.

Re: John Oliver on OAN misinformation idiocy
I think it most appropriate in the USofA that we call this the the Trump virus. Lord knows Trump virus would not have been as devastating to this nation if Trump and his administration had not been so incompetent, callous, stupid, inhumane, demented, incompetent, heartless, inept, bumbling, brutal, incompetent, narcissistic, oafish, mismanaged, arrogant, gauche, clumsy, cruel ... did I mention incompetent? ...
From now on this is not Sars-cov-2 or Covid-19 but Trump virus.
Flatten the curve on Trump virus.
Stay at home, self-isolate, wash your hands of Trump virus.
Protect yourself and others from Trump virus.
Incompetence has cost our nation dearly but we can win against Trump virus!
Together we can stomp on Trump virus!
Onward to victory over Trump virus!

Re: Could he be stupider?
The germ has gotten so brilliant that the antibiotic can't keep up with it ...
I'd like to see this in a wider context.
What is happening in Denver that is different than everywhere else? What question was he answering? Is he really talking Trump Virus or something else?
We know The Bastard's stream-of-consciousness rambling takes many twists and turns when left off-script, and I'm thinking he was *not* talking Trump Virus but responding to something other.
Does anyone have the initial question The Bastard was responding to? Was it really Trump Virus or did the question have some other tack?

Re: Could he be stupider?
Thank you, JonF.
I did find the full briefing on YouTube and was able to see the full scope of the question and The Orange Bastard’s (OB) answer, and I’m pretty sure he was *not* talking *only* about Trump Virus directly when he was rambling on.
I can imagine that during this crisis Dr. Fauci is giving 101-level classes to OB during which he cited antibiotic resistance as another major problem though not directly related to Trump Virus except that this bug too is, childishly put, a *smart* bug that seeks to thwart our immune defenses.
So OB’s few semi-literate neurons naturally glom onto the antibiotic story when he’s trying to say how much of a problem Trump Virus is because it too, like the bacteria Dr. Fauci told him about, are really really smart and really really invisible. Shades of a 6 year-old trying to comprehend biology.
The tell-tale was when OB tried, and flubbed, his rendition of going into heart surgery and then dying from infection. We all know that such occurrences are not rare due to antibiotic resistance and unrelated to Trump Virus.
So, I’m thinking that OB went into one of his stream-of-consciousness modes and his few semi-literate neurons kept changing lanes without signaling unable to focus on his subject of how complex Trump Virus is without getting sidetracked into his rather elementary-school playground-level knowledge of superbugs and the antibiotic resistance problem.
The original giggle of The Orange Bastard thinking antibiotics relate to Trump Virus is probably not true. In its place we are left with the more dangerous nightmare of watching OB’s childish thought processes in action again.
We’re screwed.
