The usual right-wing lies on Obama.
Did Obama Declare Swine Flu an Emergency Only After 'Millions' Were Infected? | Snopes.com
quote:
There are several factual inaccuracies in this excerpt alone. For instance, PJ media writes that H1N1 became a pandemic in April 2009. But that’s not the case. The disease emerged in April but wasn’t declared a pandemic until June.
The excerpt also claims that Obama declared a public health emergency on what was already a pandemic in October 2009. But this is also wrong. Obama declared a national emergency, not a public health emergency, in October 2009. The Obama administration declared a public health emergency in April, months before swine flu was declared a pandemic. At the time that the Obama administration declared a public health emergency, only 20 confirmed cases (not over a million) of H1N1 existed in the United States.[...]
On April 26, the administration declared swine flu a public health emergency, allowing the shipment of roughly 12 million doses of flu-fighting medications from a federal stockpile to states in case they eventually needed them. At the time, there were 20 confirmed cases in the U.S. of people recovering easily. There was no vaccine against swine flu, but the CDC had taken the initial step necessary for producing one.
As a nation, we have prepared at all levels of government, and as individuals and communities, taking unprecedented steps to counter the emerging pandemic, Obama wrote in Saturday’s declaration.
In sum, the PJ Media article claimed that Obama waited until millions of people were infected with H1N1 before he declared an emergency. But that isn’t the case. The Obama administration started to address H1N1 just as the disease emerged in April 2009. A public health emergency was declared on April 26, 2009, when there were about 20 confirmed cases in the United States. The Obama administration renewed this declaration twice in the ensuing months before declaring a national emergency in October 2009.
From that experience we learned about measures to minimize the spread, and are applying that knowledge now.
Trump dawdled and ducked the issue for two months. Much slower than Obama.

Re: It was the WuHan virus to everybody until Trump used it, then it was racism.
All I was saying was that it is STANDARD to call a pandemic by its source.
But there is no certainty about the origin of the Spanish flu except that it wasn't Spain. On this page you'll see that France, China and Britain were all considered to be its origin at one time or other. The US was also named because that's where the first case was identified on a military base in Kansas. But that doesn't make it the point of origin.
Why Was It Called the 'Spanish Flu?' - HISTORY
On the google page for "Where did the Spanish flu start?" you get:
More recently, experts have proposed a third hypothesis: The Spanish flu originated somewhere in northern China in late 1917 and swiftly moved to western Europe with the 140,000 Chinese laborers the French and British governments recruited to perform manual labor to free up troops for wartime duty.May 22, 2018
Somewhere I heard that many of the pandemics have originated in China with their "wet markets" where they kill all kinds of wild animals and sell them for food. Bats, monkeys, etc.

That quote is what I've heard, that Obama didn't declare a national emergency until October after I think it was 10,000 had already died. Perhaps there are reasonable explanations for that but the point is that Trump did act very quickly and yet he's not credited with that.

Re: It was the WuHan virus to everybody until Trump used it, then it was racism.
A 2018 study of tissue slides and medical reports led by evolutionary biology professor Michael Worobey found evidence against the disease originating from Kansas as those cases were milder and had fewer deaths compared to the situation in New York City in the same time period. The study did find evidence through phylogenetic analyses that the virus likely had a North American origin, though it was not conclusive. In addition, the haemagglutinin glycoproteins of the virus suggest that it was around far prior to 1918 and other studies suggest that the reassortment of the H1N1 virus likely occurred in or around 1915.[23]
China had a mild flue season during that time, making it the least likely candidate.

Re: It was the WuHan virus to everybody until Trump used it, then it was racism.
The media called it the Wu Han flu without anybody objecting. The only objection was to Trump's calling it the China flu. This is hypocrisy. And it's not racism no matter who says it. That's just the usual PC smear, trotted out for Trump but not for all the others who used the term. If in retrospect you believe it to be racism then point to all the others, but you won't of course because there's no benefit except for calling Trump a racist.

Calling it the wu han virus is better then calling it the china flue, Cause if you do you get a bunch of rednecks beating up Chinese people for poisoning their corona bear with their virus.

Obama acted very quickly, declaring a medical emergency months before swine flu was a pandemic. Read the Snopes ext I posted.
Trump ran from the issue for over two months, and he's still trying to avoid it. That's the opposite of acting quickly.
Here it is in list form, from Trump's Statements About the Coronavirus - FactCheck.org
quote:
Jan. 22: We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine. Trump in a CNBC interview.
Jan. 30: We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment five and those people are all recuperating successfully. But we’re working very closely with China and other countries, and we think it’s going to have a very good ending for us that I can assure you. Trump in a speech in Michigan.
Feb. 10: Now, the virus that we’re talking about having to do you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We’re in great shape though. We have 12 cases 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now. Trump at the White House. (See our item Will the New Coronavirus ‘Go Away’ in April?)
Feb. 14: There’s a theory that, in April, when it gets warm historically, that has been able to kill the virus. So we don’t know yet; we’re not sure yet. But that’s around the corner. Trump in speaking to National Border Patrol Council members.
Feb. 23: We have it very much under control in this country. Trump in speaking to reporters.
Feb. 24: The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me! Trump in a tweet.
Feb. 26: So we’re at the low level. As they get better, we take them off the list, so that we’re going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time. So we’ve had very good luck. Trump at a White House briefing.
Feb. 26: And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done. Trump at a press conference.
Feb. 26: I think every aspect of our society should be prepared. I don’t think it’s going to come to that, especially with the fact that we’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up. Trump at a press conference, when asked if U.S. schools should be preparing for a coronavirus spreading.
Feb. 27: It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle it will disappear. Trump at a White House meeting with African American leaders.
Feb. 29: And I’ve gotten to know these professionals. They’re incredible. And everything is under control. I mean, they’re very, very cool. They’ve done it, and they’ve done it well. Everything is really under control. Trump in a speech at the CPAC conference outside Washington, D.C.
March 4: [W]e have a very small number of people in this country [infected]. We have a big country. The biggest impact we had was when we took the 40-plus people [from a cruise ship]. We brought them back. We immediately quarantined them. But you add that to the numbers. But if you don’t add that to the numbers, we’re talking about very small numbers in the United States. Trump at a White House meeting with airline CEOs.
March 4: Well, I think the 3.4% is really a false number. Trump in an interview on Fox News, referring to the percentage of diagnosed COVID-19 patients worldwide who had died, as reported by the World Health Organization. (See our item Trump and the Coronavirus Death Rate.)
March 7: No, I’m not concerned at all. No, we’ve done a great job with it. Trump, when asked by reporters if he was concerned about the arrival of the coronavirus in the Washington, D.C., area.
March 9: So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that! Trump in a tweet.
March 10: And we’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away. Trump after meeting with Republican senators.
A day later, on March 11, the WHO declared the global outbreak a pandemic.

Obama acted faster.
2009 H1N1 Pandemic Timeline | Pandemic Influenza (Flu) | CDC
This is the CDC timeline, showing that The US had a handful of DETECTED cases when Obama issued an emergency. For trump to have acted as fast as Obama, the day trump braged there where only 15 cases and soon there would be none he would have to have declared an emergency.

Trump banned travel from China somewhere around Jan 30.
Trump did think it was under control and the reason he kept emphasizing that was what he considered to be the dangerous hysteria the media were putting out. So far it still isn't a major problem in the country though we know it could eventually get there. And what he said about the seasonal rise in temperature slowing it down is still to be discovered. Trump is unfortunately not careful about what he says, often overstating things, but it is clear from your list that he was responding to the hysteria by wanting to calm things down. Now here we are most of us in quarantine just waiting. The numbers are going up but not as fast as might have been expected by some.

Yea its just New York thats running out of hospital beds, and the numbers keep rising.
I don't think you get the power of exponential growth. Let me try to explain it to you with a story. Long a go A king wanted to reward the person who invented Chess, so he asked him what would you like for your reward. The man said i would like one grain for the first square, two for the second, four for the third, 8 for the fourth and so on till all 64 squares are filled. The king said ok thinking it was a meagre reward and told his mathematicians to calculate the sum. So the day went by and he asked them so how much grain do we have to give them they answered we are still calculating, ok by the end of the second day he asked them the same, the answer was we are still calculating. by the end of the weak they where finally done and had bad news for the king, They said even if we dry out all the seas and plant nothing but grain we still would not have enough grain to pay the man.
Right now The rate of infection in the United states is the highest in the world.

Of course the rate is very high and we're just waiting to see how high it goes.
I just get tired of the kneejerk blaming of Trump when he's been doing really quite a creditable job. Obama's speech was very nice by the way but did he have to cope with a media hysteria trying to blame him for everything including the virus itself? Uh uh.

The only creditable job Trump has done is taking false credit for what others forced his idiocy to do.
