Re: How can countries reopen?
Wishing me long life would have been neutral enough but I wonder why I suspect a hidden jab at me as you've worded it?
More realistic would be to wish me death by coronavirus and in my current mood I might wish it on myself, just hope it happens fast so I don't take up too much needed equipment.

China travel "ban"
Trump Says He Never Read, Looked for Memo Warning of Possible Coronavirus Pandemic
quote:
Instead, the restrictions Trump has touted as evidence that he took the threat of COVID-19 seriously when confronted with statements he made downplaying it applied only to foreign nationals, and did not cover residents of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. U.S. citizens and permanent residents were also exempt from the restrictions, and incoming flights did not stop landing at U.S. airports until several weeks later. Nearly 40,000 people arrived on inbound flights from China in the 60 days after Trump imposed the partial restrictions he now touts as a ban, according to The New York Times.

National Academy of Sciences says warm weather wont give the virus a pause
It is a brand new report and I just about shit myself reading it.
Another fantasy shot down. On the same ash heap as the herd immunity b.s.
SARS and MERS were not reduced in their spread in hot and humid weather. Iran and Australia are in summer now. NAS looks at climates in various countries.
And on the immunity fantasy, it should be noted that coronavirus colds are caught over and over again. 10 percent of Wuhan survivors have caught the virus again after recovery.
This is not an easy escape and the 15,000 U. S. deaths are just a small fraction of what is coming. And much more than 60,000 deaths are coming, and I think it's a tactical psychological thingy to claim only 45,000 more will die. Fauci and the credible scientifically minded people are just sure they will have to fudge the numbers in a severely lowballing way to shut up the Hoaxer Truther types who keep on keeping on with complaints that this has been overblown. The evidence that this is really worse than we can imagine WILL COME so temporary scientific fraud studies will have to do for now. Let us see the understating and low balling studies but know that we have no choice.

Re: How can countries reopen?
I'm just continuing the Coronavirus and Pandemics subthread.
When there's no vaccine, how does one safely reopen a country? Most countries report infection rates of .1%, .2%, maybe .3%, somewhere in that range. Survivors of infection are presumably immune, but those percentages are minuscule, negligible even. Even if we assume the infection rate is actually much higher than it is measuring due to a lack of testing, a country where, say, 5% of the population is immune is still extremely vulnerable.
Any country that reopens will only be reclimbing the coronavirus infection curve and will have to shut down again. Even if there's a summer reprieve (many experts think this doubtful, but even if there is), the coronavirus will pick up again in the fall and countries will have to close down again.
So how do we get out of this? There are two different approaches that I think would work:
  • High effectiveness masks and gloves for everyone. Everyone would always wear masks and gloves. The bar and restaurant industry would continue to be devastated, but most of the rest of the country would be able to reopen. The Federal Defense Act should be used to get 3M and so forth all producing as many masks and gloves as possible, approximately 300 million per day. This is approximately 30 times greater than current production rates.
  • Massive testing. Everyone would be required to take a quick test every morning and wear a badge on their person stating they'd taken the test before they'd be allowed in any public area, from the grocery store to walking down 5th avenue.
General Motors, Ford, Apple, Intel, Dell, they should all be required by the federal government under the Federal Defense Act to begin producing the rapid test, which takes about five minutes. Producing ventilators is senseless - they won't be ready until well past the time of greatest need.
Those who fail the test begin a two week quarantine. Those who pass go about their normal daily business.
In the summer of 2021 a vaccine should begin to become available and only then can life return to normal.
Or we could take Trump's "ride it out" approach, suffer 2 million dead in this country alone, and keep the country continuously open. 2 million is only .6% of the country, and older people, especially older Republicans, have expressed a willingness to die if it helps saves the country's economy. It's an interesting attitude, a willingness to personally make the ultimate sacrifice as a show of support for your own party's demonstrated incompetence in handling the crisis. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, I'm looking at you.

Re: The Latest US Coronavirus Graph
Here's today's graph of infections in the US as of 4/8 from ArcGIS Dashboards Classic:
No signs of slowing. I've decided that the transition from logarithmic growth to linear increases is two causes:
  • Mitigation strategies like working from home and the general population wearing more PPE.
  • While the infection rate is still growing exponentially, the availability of tests is only growing linearly.
Here is a graph of deaths in the US as of 4/8 from Cumulative Cases - Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, again, no signs of slowing:
Hey, yeah, let's reopen the country at Easter, it'll be such a beautiful thing.

Just Do Your Job
There has been insufficient mention here of Trump's unwillingness to do his job. When he does do some small part of his job he demands praise, otherwise he'll stop doing the little he's already doing. Has there been another time in US history when a president has so publicly declared that he won't help those who express insufficient appreciation of the suffering he's causing, of the abrogation of responsibilities he's engaged in?
I can just hear Trump at a press conference had he been president during WWII:
Reporter: Mr. President, can you tell us how soon Pearl Harbor will be ready as a naval port again?
Trump: Such a nasty question. Pearl Harbor's doing fine. We're doing a fantastic job over there, especially now that I've fired the politically motivated IG in charge of overseeing our efforts there, who served in four different administrations of both parties. You are a third rate reporter and a disgrace. You'll never make it.
Reporter: Mr President, what measures are we taking to insure the safety of the mainland?
Trump: What you're doing, it’s so bad for for our country, so bad for the world. You ought to put it together for a little while, get this over with, and then go back to your fake news.

Another possibility
Nitric oxide — a gas that led to Viagra — could emerge as COVID-19 treatment
quote:
Nitric oxide, a gas that could improve breathing and potentially mitigate severe symptoms of the coronavirus, is among the latest contenders in the race to find a treatment for COVID-19.
Naturally produced by the body, nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels, increasing the amount of oxygen being transferred to the blood and reducing the heart's workload. The molecule not to be confused with nitrous oxide or laughing gas is already used to treat heart disease, erectile dysfunction and respiratory illness.
Hospitals in Boston, Alabama, Louisiana, Sweden and Austria have started a clinical trial to test the treatment on patients with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19. Patients inhale nitric oxide through a CPAP breathing machine for 20 to 30 minutes. The treatment is given twice a day for two weeks

Oh bummer. I could have enjoyed that.

Feb 29 was first U.S. soil death, now April 9 has over 16,500 deaths
About 6 full weeks of deadly serious consequences.
This is a lesson on what kind of stuff is always possible, every single year.
Never forget.
