Re: Winter cold or the virus?
November is really early, and if the virus had been freely spreading it ought to have been noticed. So it’s almost certainly a winter cold or flu.

Re: Winter cold or the virus?
It was at the very end of November on into December, but you could be right, that's what they thought at the time too. But it was a very unusual cold, and although there was a fever they didn't hink of it as the flu for some reason. Just a very odd set of symptoms.

Re: Winter cold or the virus?
That’s nearly two months before the first recorded cases in the US. Unless one of them had been to Wuhan or closely associated with someone who had, I can’t see it as likely at all.

Re: Economic collapse?
Faith writes: Is it possible to get back to anything like normal if this lockdown continues much longer? Of course it is. The Great Depression lasted over a decade.

Re: Winter cold or the virus?
Or Italy or one of the other places where it had been found.

Re: Winter cold or the virus?
I think that November is too early for anywhere but Wuhan to be a likely source. Italy didn’t have any recorded cases until late January.

Re: Winter cold or the virus?
There are possible connections to China at least, but they haven't been verified.

Chicago area hospital drive-thru tests more people with antibodies than active virus
Roseland Hospital phlebotomist: 30% of those tested have coronavirus antibody | Chicago City Wire
A phlebotomist working at Roseland Community Hospital said Thursday that 30% to 50% of patients tested for the coronavirus have antibodies while only around 10% to 20% of those tested have the active virus. Sumaya Owaynat, a phlebotomy technician, said she tests between 400 and 600 patients on an average day in the parking lot at Roseland Community Hospital. Drive-thru testing is from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. each day. However, the hospital has a limited number of tests they can give per day. Owaynat said the number of patients coming through the testing center who appear to have already had coronavirus and gotten over it is far greater than those who currently have the disease. So far there is nothing comparable for California but it seems very possible that they too could have a large number of people with antibodies. There are interesting stories about how Californai had an especially severe flu season starting in the Fall which could reflect the virus instead, or at least some of it could be the virus. The reports do distinguish flu from the virus but they don't seem to have any solid ground for deciding which is which. This is one story about it and there are others at Patch.com. This was written on Feb 1:
'Double-Barreled' Flu Season Slams California In Deadliest Week The flu's death toll continues to climb in California, and many will get sick twice because of outbreaks of the Influenza A and B strains. Grifters gotta grift
REVEALED: White House pushed FEMA to give its biggest coronavirus contract to a company that never had to bid quote: In an unusual move, even in times of disaster, the White House stepped into the federal purchasing process, ordering the Federal Emergency Management Agency to award a contract to AirBoss of America. The Trump administration has rushed through hundreds of deals to address the pandemic without the usual oversight, more than $760 million reported as of this week, but the AirBoss transaction is the single largest no-bid purchase, a ProPublica analysis of federal purchasing data found. While FEMA placed the order, it was directed to do so by the White House, ProPublica found. It is unclear why the White House chose AirBoss for the protective equipment, which is similar to products made by other vendors.
Raise your hand if you think there's more to the story.

Re: Chicago area hospital drive-thru tests more people with antibodies than active virus
This all suggests that we’re dealing with the California virus, not the China virus. Right, Faith?

Re: Chicago area hospital drive-thru tests more people with antibodies than active virus
Sounds a tad fishy to me. As far as I know we don't have the capability to do that testing accurately. We definitely don't have an FDA approved test. Coronavirus antibody testing: What is it? Can it reopen US economy?
quote: How reliable are these tests? Over 50 commercial manufacturers are seeking FDA approval for antibody tests, Theel said. But Dr. Raed Dweik, chairman of the Respiratory Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, said some of the tests he's seen aren't accurate enough to determine if someone is truly immune to the coronavirus.
This is because antibodies for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 look very similar to antibodies that respond to coronaviruses that cause other illnesses, such as the common cold. Tests could mistakenly identify antibodies as being for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, producing a false positive. Dweik said it will take more time to develop a test that can accurately detect the right antibodies. "The timing is tricky," he said. "Developing this test has been fraught with problems." In addition, scientists don't know a lot about the protective value of coronavirus antibodies, said Dr. Carlos del Rio, an infectious disease expert and executive associate dean at Emory University. The test to identify HIV, for example, is an antibody test. "Having those antibodies doesn't necessarily mean immunity," he said. Few of the coronavirus antibody tests have been vetted to determine their clinical accuracy, Theel said. No test is 100 percent accurate, she said, and it's up to the clinical laboratories to decide which ones are best for their patients. "It's one of the biggest concerns right now because there's so many tests out there and we don’t know how the vast majority of them work," she said.
{emphasis added} US coronavirus cases top 500,000 as researchers say the worst is yet to come in Texas and Florida - CNN (today, the 10th)
quote: Antibody tests that would verify whether a person recently had the novel coronavirus could be available within a week, according to the nation's top infectious disease expert. "Within a period of a week or so, we're going to have a rather large number of tests that are available," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on CNN's "New Day" Friday morning.

He so wishes to rewrite history.
Worker threw exception | www.rawstory.com | Cloudflare
quote: The ad clips Biden’s words out of context to misleadingly imply that Biden criticized Trump’s decision to restrict travel from China, when that’s not what Biden did, wrote Sargent. Second, the ad relies on numerous past quotes from Biden to demonstrate he’s supposedly been soft on China. But those quotes were mostly boilerplate diplomatic language and Trump has repeatedly praised China in language very close to what Biden has used And third, the Asian man that Biden bowed to turns out to be Gary Locke, a former Washington governor and U.S. ambassador to China, an American. But there’s a deeper absurdity here that needs to be appreciated, continued Sargent. Throughout the early weeks of coronavirus, Trump repeatedly praised China’s handling of coronavirus. Importantly, this praise was central to advancing the argument that Trump had totally beaten down coronavirus with merciless force and efficiency: Trump kept insisting he was successfully collaborating with China to defeat it. Yet at around that same time, Biden was warning against taking China’s assurances about coronavirus at face value. On February 25, for example, Trump praised China for working very, very hard to contain the virus, and that it’s going to go away before it does real harm in America because China is getting it more and more under control.
The Faiths of this country are gonna swallow it whole.
