Re: What's your bet. Mid May
Currently:
USA Spain
population 328.2 46.9
deaths per mil 232 558
deaths per day 2,129 213
So if everything (deaths perday stays the same) the US won't pass spain for 6 months
but as you say, the us deaths will trend up while spains goes down
so it can be much faster than that
but it can't trend up and down fast enough to make mid may
I'd guess Aug 1 at the earliest

Excess Deaths
Tracking covid-19 excess deaths across countries | The Economist
The Economist is supplying interesting data broken down in a lot of detail. I think you might find this interesting.

Re: Comparing Costs: The Cure and the Disease
What this seem to forget and what I think will be found out by the end of June is that the virus will shut down a lot of commerce by itself. So if you don't take pretty drastic measures you don't get a poor health outcome and a good economy instead you get a very poor health outcome and an economic mess as well.

Masks on Sale
They seem to be everywhere here. All the dollar type stores started carrying disposible ones a month or more ago. Now some have cloth ones too. The closest 2 drug stores have them.
Plus there are lots online.

Re: Less than 25,000 U.S. deaths in June, with 3 days to go.
Those numbers do show a drop in the fatality (death) rate per case diagnosed. from .79 to .70. That can certainly be attributed to more testing finding more (and non fatal ) cases.
However, there is another number which is scary. The deaths per million of population that are attributed to covid 19. The UK, spain and Italy show in the 500 to 650 range while the US is "only" 387 (by one site). But the US is going up at 1 or 2 per day on that metric.
I think, as noted by others, we can expect that to climb more quickly next month. I'll predict it will cross 450 by September and go on from there to pass the "leaders" by years end. That's push the number of deaths past the 200,000 mark.
Some months ago the US's deaths per capita was twice Canada's. Then we caught up so you were "only" 1.5 times ours. Now you are on a fast track to be killing twice as many as we have again.
Just a note: several have tried to sneak into Canada by saying they were driving through to Alaska which was allowed. The fine dished out was $CDN 1200. (about 900 US). So stay home.

Congratulations to the Greatest Country
Here I am in Canada, that backwards socialist country with the health care system the Republicans deride. There you are, stuck in the greatest country on earth.
Sometime today or tomorrow your per capita death rate will rise back up to double ours. That shows the world.
