You constantly seek to set up a false assumption, to justify your false exclusive dichotomy.
Your false assumption is that meaning, intent and understanding can only be conveyed through the literal interpretation of language. We have explained to you, as kindly as we can, that meaning, intent and understanding can perfectly well be conveyed through numerous other avenues, but you are desperate to be able to present your false dichotomy, and so revert constantly to your false assumption. You know what Trump was saying to the Ukraine. I do too. Everyone does. There is no exclusive dichotomy of Trump breaking the law through the specific and ring-fenced use of literally interpreted terms, and Trump not breaking the law. Edited by vimesey, : Clarifying the false dichotomy.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

So yes words matter. Still with the false assumption and misunderstanding. The literal interpretation of specific words is not the only way to convey meaning, intent and message. Certainly that is one way, but it is not the only way. You do understand that, don't you ? Take another example. Tony Ianucci visits Joe Businessman who's just set up shop in a shiny new warehouse. Tony sits down with Joe and says "Lovely business you've got here - but your stock looks really flammable and those windows don't look too secure. I hope your insurance is up to scratch. Moving on to other things, the busineses around here like to contribute $20,000 a year or so to the Ianucci Charitable Fund - you might want to help out the local orphans too, so here are the bank details." Now, has extortion just taken place ? Extortion requires a threat of violence, so has a threat been made ? There are no words whose literal interpretation represent a threat. Has a crime occurred ? According to you, it hasn't. According to numerous court cases over the years, it has. This would be because the Courts are able to look reality in the face and say "yup, that's reality".Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

My guess is that Rudy has way too much on Donnie to be truly underbussed by him.
I suspect that Rudy has advised Trump to do this, banking on his own ability as a lawyer/liar to protect himself from any criminal consequences.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

I would have thought it better to let them run rough shod over this, and have what will be seen more clearly as a sham.
Trump won't be found to be in breach of his duties by the GOP in any event - better to have clear evidence of childish and un-dignified collusion by the GOP, for the Democrats to deal with in a grown up and dignified manner, thereby hopefully attracting the small group of uncomfortable Republican voters in the coming election. I think the best hope is that the GOP becomes so brazen and over-confident, that some conservatives think "whoah, hold on a minute."Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Just read about Il Duce's booboo on where the Chiefs play: Trump Mistakenly Congratulates Kansas City, Kan., on Its Super Bowl Win - The New York Times
Not a major slip up, but if I'd made it in his shoes, I'd have smiled, apologised and made a joke about going back to geography lessons for a couple of weeks. That would have been one of the approaches which would bring a divided nation together though. Not what Don wants. A shame, that.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ? |

Could there possibly be some kind of money-making scheme in operation? I would not put that past Trump. Well, according to the BBC’s take on this story: Trump’s Aggressive Advocacy of Malaria Drug for Treating Coronavirus Divides Medical Community - The New York Times The report suggests that Trump himself has a "small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine". It does seem to be a small interest, but hey, every dollar and all that.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

You get to a point with Trump where you entirely expect deep and ingrained stupidity - but then he lowers the bar yet further.
I mean, ingesting disinfectant is bad enough - and I presume it’s the same in the States as it is here, that there are warning signs on the bottles telling you not to do it and to take your baby to A&E if they accidentally do it. But injecting it into the blood stream ??? I await with resigned depression the first report of someone giving it a go.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Just out of curiosity, a question for our members in the US - is even Fox News reporting (with weasel words, to try to get Trump off the hook) that taking or injecting disinfectant is a really, really bad thing for their viewers to attempt ?

I read that one of Trump’s comments about his u-turn on the CV task force was as follows:
I thought we could wind it down sooner. But I had no idea how popular the taskforce is until actually yesterday when I started talking about winding down. It is appreciated by the public. So the metric is popularity. Not efficacy and success in saving lives, but popularity. Because lives don’t matter as much as Trump getting re-elected, do they ?Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

And what new information is he referencing ? Popularity.
Efficacy, results, saving lives, scientific data ? Nope. He just refers to popularity. That is the measure of a would-be dictator. Or a stuck up arsehole, if you prefer.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Oh wait - silly me - that would involve taking money from rich people wouldn't it ? And we can't be having that now, can we ?Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?
