I'm not that impressed by people who write things down in books and claim to be speaking for a deity. How about you?

That is a good point, and I don't pretend to ignore the atrocities done "in the name of Christianity or Jesus" but I will defend the basic message due to the fact that I ascribe to the belief fully and likely would dismiss the actions by saying that though they were real Christians they were unchanged and not transformed. Not to say that we have been given this great gift fully either. Who knows?

I gravitate towards a more wholistic approach. When people sacrifice their own moral instincts in the name of obedience to a charismatic leader they run the risk of committing terrible atrocities.
