Re: And the new name (for this year only) is...
They could always call themselves the Washington Football Club.
There actually is a (British style football, not American style football) team called NYC FC, meaning "New York City Football Club"

The Washington Columbuses.
Or the Washington Colns to honor the Hispanic fans.
Or, if Cristbal Coln isn't sufficiently Latinx (being of Genoese origin, it is rumoured) then:
The Washington Pizarros.

Team names like "Pirates" are rather surprising, in that they don't connote fun and games but rather crime and fear. I've always wondered what the Europeans of the Middle Ages would have said if someone had told them, "Those Vikings that raped and pillaged your lands? A thousand years from now they'll be celebrated by thousands of fans in great stadiums!" Buccaneers, Devils, etc. are similar incongruous names.
In that spirit, and as a nod to Marion Barry, I propose
THE WASHINGTON CRACK DEALERS
