Re: Dollars, Taxes
Phat writes:
First of all, it makes little sense to fund future stimulus checks by raising taxes. We pay out as much or more than we would recoup through a stimulus check.
Stimulus checks aren't intended to make a profit. They're intendrd to stimulate. Stimulate economic activity --> more tax revenue.
Phat writes:
Second of all, those of us who are ourselves in the next to lowest quadrant of economic earnings dont have room to pay higher taxes.
Tell it to those of us in the lowest quadrant.
Phat writes:
And i'm here to tell you right now that at least in my case I barely have $3,000.00 a year left over after paying all my bills and usually that too gets used.
So you could pay extra taxes on that $3,000. I have to spend everything I make.
Phat writes:
Were they to take that profit for increased taxes, I would actually fare worse.
Some people already do fare worse.
Phat writes:
The point is that increasing taxes is not going to cover the needs that the masses require....
I don't know why you're so desparate to hoist yourself above the masses.
The masses can take care of themselves as long as they have an economic environment that lets them do it.

I'd say it was a tie between Lyndon Johnson and Woodrow Wilson.
A few years ago we had a member here - I don't remember his name - who was pretty sensible in the science threads. Then one day he made the statement that Obama was the worst president in history. I told him he just lost all credibility.
You seem to be following in his footsteps.

You Americans need to change your insane attitude toward taxes. Any politician, including an open sewer like Trump, can get your vote by promising to lower taxes.
Do you know what lower taxes get you? Higher taxes in the future.

Sarah Bellum writes:
I was referring to the marginal case where increasing the number of people with your emphasis on repelling possible Biden voters rather than attracting them might just decrease the number of Biden voters so much that the net result would be a loss of voters for Mr. Biden.
I can't make any sense of that sentence.
Sarah Bellum writes:
Don't get me wrong, I can read the opinion polls and can see that Biden, four months out, is leading. And if he does win, it certainly appears he'll be a better President than any Democrat in my lifetime.
In my lifetime, the only two decent Republicans have been Eisenhower and Ford.
Sarah Bellum writes:
But you're wasting all these opportunities to persuade me....
As I said, I wouldn't try to persuade you.

But he still has to run on his record in addition to his promises.
There's a difference. Trump has to run on his record as President - i.e. on real facts. Biden only has to run against innuendo.

Re: The enemy of my enemy IS my friend?
Sarah Bellum writes:
Of course this article is overall quite favorable to Vice President Biden, so he may be able to persuade voters to ignore his record.
It isn't about ignoring his record. It's about comparing his record to Trump's. And Trump has a record AS PRESIDENT too. We don't know what effect Biden's flaws would have on his presidency. We DO know what effect Trump's flaws HAVE HAD on his presidency and likely WOULD HAVE on a second term. With Biden, at least we know he is capable of changing.
