You said you were speculating about what you knew. Since it was a speculation, it had to be about what they thought they knew.
Knowing through observation or through informing oneself by other means is not the same as thinking, which can include opinions and imaginary things and speculations and so forth. Percy writes:
As I said, there's little point in speculating about what went through their minds in those few seconds. If they didn't know the bomb was fake, why did they fire into his chest and abdomen where the bomb was?"If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you...." -- Rudyard Kipling

There were at least three officers there. 3 x 4 = 12. Is four rounds excessive?
Yes."I'm Fallen and I can't get up!"

You're seriously deluded. In our entertainment media, the cops are worshipped to an embarassing degree - the bad ones along with the good. The most archetypal villains of our time are brown terrorists and brown drug dealers. I am, after all, the most despised thing on the planet. 1. Male2. Caucasian 3. American 4. Police Officer That is the most archetypal villain in the modern era...."I'm Fallen and I can't get up!"

It's an apt comparison. Hmm, maybe that's why they call cops "Blue Isis.""I'm Fallen and I can't get up!"

There aren't as many stagecoach robberies as there used to be either. There's actually never been less police corruption than now because of the amount of oversight and the advent of the cellphone."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

Meaning... if there were stagecoaches, there would be stagecoach robberies. If cops could get away with corruption, there would be corruption.

We don't have "good 'ole boy" agencies to the extent that you do in the states but the RCMP are still being dragged kicking and screaming into the twentieth century. Racism and sexism are pretty rampant.
There are definitely still some good 'ole boy agencies in the backwoods of America and I'm sure to a lesser extent in Canada. Hyroglyphx writes:
When I worked for the RCMP (on support staff), we had a cleaner fired for stealing. He was hauled away in handcuffs and he wasn't even allowed back on the base to pick up his car; his roommate had to get it for him. During the same period of time, three RCMP sergeants got caught stealing. They got early retirement.
Most agencies though have enormous incentive to root out shitty officers. Hyroglyphx writes:
I believe that many would defend him if they could. Many do in less extreme cases. Do you really believe that most agencies would want a Derek Chauvin on their team? Equally, do you truly believe that most or even many cops see parity with him or defend him?"I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

In Canada we have recently had a couple of cases in which people were killed by police during "wellness checks". Are the police doctors? Can the police tell the difference between "well" and "dead"? If not, maybe it should be added to their training."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

That's a good excuse for anything that goes wrong. But those aren't deemed newsworthy so you never hear about it. It's also the excuse for doing nothing about it: As longs as thousands of people DON'T get shot by the police, everything is fine."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

From my perspective, a gun is not effective for testing wellness. Or it helps keep things in perspective."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

That's what I said. They don't need guns to check on wellness - but since they've got them, might as well use them, eh? Police don’t need a firearm to do any portion of their job... Sending police with guns to check on wellness is like sending an arsonist to check for fires."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

Medical personnel deal with mental health issues all the time - without guns. Crazy people sometimes act crazy...."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

That police don't "check" on "wellness" by shooting the patient. So what exactly are you looking for? 1. When police interact on mental health issues that they disarm.2. That police not interact with mental health calls at all but still remained armed. 3. That police ought not be armed whatsoever but can still interact on mental health calls. 4. That police ought not to be armed whatsoever and also cannot interact on mental health calls. It reminds me of Swiss Family Robinson, when the boys are out exploring:
"What's that?" BLAM! "Oh, it's some kind of gull." Granted, it is easier to examine the patient when he's dead."What's that?" BLAM! "Oh, it's some kind of rabbit." If somebody is sent to "check" on "wellness", they should certainly NOT be armed. Those checks should be done by qualified mental health professionals, not by qualified shooters."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

The answer was 5.
Why didn't answer my question? Would you choose 1,2,3, or 4? Hyroglyphx writes:
Nonsense. If the police didn't bring a gun to either situation, the outcome would be different. Having the capability to shoot people is a major cause of shooting people. The traffic stop or a check welfare is what initially brought them into contact with one another but it is the other person's actions that dictate how its going to go."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

False dichotomy. Another alternative would be to check the person's wellness without violence. As I pointed out, mental health professionals do that every day. So the other alternative is have either the officer die or the offender be clubbed to death or stabbed to death by the officer’s own knife. If police go into any situation with a them-or-me attitude, then it's more likely that there will be violence."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing
