Only New York City and New Orleans at their peaks had more cases per 100,000 population than the Rio Grande Valley is experiencing right now. And six of the current ten highest rates of hospitalizations currently are also in Texas.

Based on the number of known Covid-19 cases during July it is reasonable to expect somewhere between 3000 and 5000 Covid-19 deaths in Hidalgo County during the month of August even with a total shut down and return to square one.
That's another 3000 to 5000 deaths and there is NOTHING we can do about that.
But if we don't do even more then come September we will call August the Happy Times.

Here I am in Canada, that backwards socialist country with the health care system the Republicans deride. There you are, stuck in the greatest country on earth.
Sometime today or tomorrow your per capita death rate will rise back up to double ours. That shows the world. |

No idea what happened in Denver so can't compare.
What happened here is they opened up for business and made the decision that deaths and sickness were preferable than telling people they must behave in a civilized manner.

Today is the last day of July.
During March, April, May and June we had a total of 3982 known cases of Covid-19 and had 32 deaths. During July alone we had 12,924 additional known cases and recorded 615 additional deaths. We will begin August with hospitals over filled, medical staff exhausted, short on supplies and having to use makeshift facilities like Convention Centers with open wards of up to 250 beds. Oh and refrigerator trucks as morgues. FEMA should start showing up to assess Hanna losses and we still have thousands of homes flooded and thousands of homes without power.

We made it through one week of August. We are under a Stay-at-Home order but the Governor still will not allow that order to be enforced.
So how well is that working? In the first week of July we saw 1700 new Covid-19 cases and there were 58 deaths recorded. The first week of August saw testing severely curtailed due to Hurricane Hanna but there were still 2528 new cases and 146 deaths.

Covid-19 in Hidalgo County still the same. 15% of those tested come back positive and over 4% of those die.

Johns Hopkins University recently released a comparison of Covid-19 deaths per 100,000 population.
In Hidalgo County the rate is at 134 deaths per 100,000 population and still growing.

Man walked into a bar in New Orleans.
I'll have a Corona and two hurricanes. That'll be 20.20.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but it is even more timely now to be very clear about this:

Also, masks protect you whether you're the infected or the infectee. A droplet that cannot be exhaled through a mask cannot be inhaled through a mask, either. A test - which only looked at transmission from the mask wearer - found that a properly-fitted N95 mask was best. But a surgical mask was very nearly as good, and better than an N95 mask that was not properly fitted. How far this goes for masks protecting the wearer isn’t certain but I suspect that fitting might be even more important.
So I think that most people might be better off with the surgical masks. Oh, and please cut the loops of disposable masks before disposing of them. If they get into the environment wildlife can get entangled.
