Just to wish you guys all the very best for today. I know it won’t be easy, whatever happens, but I have my fingers crossed that you’ll avoid the worst outcome. Go give him hell at the ballot box !

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Democracy's inherent weakness
Oh, America, what are you doing?
Enough people are swallowing the lies. I was hearing this morning that Cuban emigree voters in Florida have voted for Trump in huge numbers because they've been told the Democrats are communists, and they've run away from a country which (in name, anyway) is communist.
Democracy's inherent weakness is that large numbers of voters, with the sort of critical thinking skills that gets them to buy into QAnon etc in droves, have the same sway and power as people with greater critical thinking skills. To be successful, you don't have to come up with the better candidate or policies - you just have to come up with the better lies.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: ITS ALL OVER...in another Month
I might just spot him envy, on the basis that I can’t imagine he would picture anyone in a position he would view as superior to his own.

I see Georgia is having a recount.
Hopefully Pennsylvania will make that irrelevant in any event. (Plus I understand from reading BBC reports, that recounts typically only make a couple of hundreds of votes difference anyway).
Encouraging to see a decent number of Republicans standing up for democratic values. In contrast, the language of Trump and his spawn is reminiscent of that used in Germany in the 1930’s - references to cowering instead of fighting; weakness instead of strength. It’s Hitler’s play book.

Much as I would enjoy the schadenfreude that would bring, I think it's all about building bridges now. Keep the people who abandoned Trump onside, and reach out to the more die hard Trumpists and try to persuade them to look at life a little differently. If we try to put the boot in to the git, it'd bring a certain satisfaction, but I think it would deepen divisions and increase the chances of populism overturning democracy in the future. Jaw jaw, not war war.
(That said, I do harbour fantasies involving the Tangerine Turd suffering greatly, but the greater good and all that)

Justices and judges should be apolitical. Separation of powers, as Montesquieu got right a couple of centuries ago.
Split power between the executive, the legislature and the executive. They don’t stray into each other’s territory, but they each have power to hold in check any attempt at despotism. That’s why the judiciary should be apolitical - so that they aren’t beholden to the masses which can propel a despot to power.
