The wall would die by lawsuits even if the money was available
The only sensible compromise is to say thatTrump can have money for his silly wall if the Mexican Government pays it. That’s what Trump promised. If he can’t get that, then maybe the decisions on how to implement border security should be based on more sensible considerations.
A bit ago, I heard that the support by "the people" for building the wall is inversely proportional to the distance they live from the Mexico border. In other words, the closer you live to "the problem", the less you like of the wall idea.
I've also heard that more limited wall building projects passed during the George Bush 2 era are still tied up in court. Even if Trump got his 5+ billion for the wall, it would be a minimum of a LONG time before much of anything actually gets built.

Re: dwise on California procedures, Moose on Minnesota variation
In California all registered voters are assigned a polling place to go to. There, they have two computer printouts: one sorts all registered voters belonging to that polling place by street name and number, the other is a log book of registered voters which we sign. You tell them your street name, then they ask for your address number, and then finally your name. If they find you listed, they line out your name and refer you to the next person who has opened the log book to your name where you sign the log book and write in your address.
Seems to be a pretty good method of voter ID - You need to know your address.
It's been a number of years since I did the voting judge thing in our tiny local precinct - Something like 120 voters is typical. I think Minnesota has also has both of those books, but IIRC, only the second one is normally used in the voting procedure.
A third person prints out a receipt with a number which I assume is unique to you, the second person writes that number in the log book next to your name, and you use that number to log into the voting machine. Our voting machines are electronic, at the end they have you verify your selections, and your selections are printed out on paper inside the machine (you can see what it's printing).
Our local system uses four election judges.
The first is the registration judge - Minnesota has available instant registration at the same time as you vote. To register, the voter must have an ID and some piece of documentation that s/he is a precinct resident (which might also be the ID). An alternative is to have another already registered voter vouch for you, that you are indeed valid to be a voter at the site. The registration judge usually does a lot of sitting around doing nothing.
The second is the person who signs you in in the registered voter roll book, adding you to that book if you are a newly registered. No ID procedure in involved - Just give your name.
The third gives you a (numbered?) little piece of paper that you put into a slotted metal box at the fourth judge.
The fourth judge gives you the paper ballot. At least at our location, there is no electronic voting, although there is a machine available to help you do your ballot.
When you complete your ballot, you fold it and stuff it into another locked slotted box.
Now, that all requires you to have already been registered, so voter ID would do nothing to stop additional unregistered votes to enter the system. In addition, everybody gets marked off when they vote, so there's no voting multiple times. And if somebody had voted posing as you then you come in to vote, then that would immediately raise a red flag, in which case I assume that that unique number in the log book could be used to find and eliminate that false ballot. Or in the case of an impostor trying to vote after you had voted, then the culprit would be exposed on the spot. In either case, I assume that the second person would need to produce some kind of ID.
In Minnesota there is no identification on the ballot that connects to the ID of what voter did that ballot.

There's a manipulated Pelosi video out there
As an aside I watched the news conference where Pelosi appeared later. Does Nancy have a medical problem I'm not aware of? She seemed to be very drunk.

Video Of Pelosi Manipulated To Make Her Sound Drunk Spreads Through Social Media
quote:
A video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), with the audio slowed to make her speech sound drunkenly slurred, is permeating the social media landscape, already infiltrating Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.
The video is from Pelosi’s Wednesday speech at the Center for American Progress. The Washington Post reported on the spread of the video.
The Facebook video in particular has already been shared more than 35,000 times. And based on some of the nearly 7,000 comments, viewers are buying it hook, line and sinker.
More at source, including copy of video in question. TPM has it filed under "real fake news".
Better watch your videos from more reliable sources.

If it quacks like a duck and it walks like a duck.
He seems to think that since he has criticized Trump he can not be alt-right.
I guess maybe he doesn't identify as alt-right but he supports a lot if not most of their positions.
There may be nuance to be considered in message 2439, but I feel considerable but not total agreement with what was said there. My impression is that Hyroglyphx has become considerably less right wing than he was a few years ago. I certainly would NOT file him under "alt-right".

Re: Planned Parenthood Refuses Federal Funds over Abortion Restrictions
That's a great solution. The government shouldn't be funding abortions with money paid in by people who object to abortion as killing an innocent human being, but citizens should be free to donate to such killings to their heart's content.
Should that same reasoning apply to funding the U.S. military/industrial complex?
Iran shot down a $200M drone. Apparently that was a spy drone, not a weaponized drone, but isn't there a better way to spend $200M?
I object to the government funding so many of these ultra-expensive military toys.

Mr. Sweetie Pie - Donald Trump
Even if Donald was getting wonderful results as president, his basic personality is still "epic jerk" (to use non-profane terminology).
I think that the "incompetent boob" charge, in a sane world, should be enough to get him impeached and removed from office.
And sheesh, Faith - If DT proclaimed water to not be wet, you'd be saying that "water is wet" is FAKE NEWS.
Or something like that.

Re: Impeachment Daydream of the Left
...The grounds for impeachment are primarily divorced from statues of the criminal code...
Enough members of the House and Senate convinced that Trump is an incompetent boob and is unsuitable to be President, willing to vote in response to that, is enough to impeach, convict, and remove him from office.

Re: Sanctimonious defense of injustice by Christtianity Today
Faith writes:
"Amoral con man" and "incompetent boob" are the level of judgment on which Trump has been impeached according to Moose, which apparently in his mind among others rises to "high crimes and misdemeanors." See Message 3957
I think Moose meant that Trump's conman-style incompetence (and he left out paranoia and narcissism and a lot of others) is what led to his committing impeachable acts (against the advice of many aides), not that being an incompetent conman was an impeachable offense.
I don't recalll using "Amoral con man" (which Trump is), and I checked and certainly didn't in my most recent message where I did use "incompetent boob".
While heavy incompetence certainly can lead to committing all kinds of wrongs, the point I was making is that if in the House's and Senate's judgement, Trump is incompetent, they could file that under "high crimes and misdemeanors".
I guess Faith would say that his not having a reasonable ability to fulfill the requirements of being President is not a valid reason for Trump being removed from the Presidency. Hell, Trump could spend the all of his waking hours sitting in a corner doing nothing but drooling on himself, and Faith would still think there is no valid reason to remove him from the Presidency. Trump has risen well above his level of incompetency (re: "Peter principle"), and should be fired. And the House and the Senate are ones having the authority and power to fire him.

Roberts Can Call Witnesses without Senate Approval
Nonreligious Questions
quote:
Neil Katyal, former Solicitor General, and two others have an op-ed in the New York Times citing the rules of impeachment in place since the Andrew Johnson impeachment in 1868 to establish that Chief Justice John Roberts has full authority to call witnesses and issue subpoenas for documents without needing the approval of Senate Republicans.
quote:
quote:
Most critically, it would take a two-thirds vote not a majority of the Senate to overrule that. This week, Democrats can and should ask the chief justice to issue subpoenas on his authority so that key witnesses of relevance like John Bolton and Mick Mulvaney appear in the Senate, and the Senate should subpoena all relevant documents as well.

Non-reverse pyschology in action?
Interesting factoid: on Meet the Press today they revealed polling showing that the seriousness with which people are treating the virus threat differs widely between Democrats and Republicans, even among older people, the most vulnerable group. Republicans are much more likely to play down the seriousness. This means they're much more likely to continue normal activity, including going out to restaurants and then visiting poor grandma.
This seems to be a devious use of non-reverse psychology by Democrats, in an attempt to enhance the dying off of Republicans. Or would it be reverse reverse psychology?

Off topic - A plug for a radio program you might like
For lack of a better place, I'm putting it here.
"What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", hosted by Paul Fischer.
Brief bio:
"Paul Fischer is a former News Director of WBAI, former News Director of KPFA and 31 year veteran of CBS News...including 24 years as writer/associate producer on the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. I've returned to my roots in public radio as an independent producer."
His Facebook page: here
The program is what he calls a "newsical". A mixture (mashup?) of music and news soundbites with a little narration from Paul.
My little radio station, KTWH-LP (KTWH-LP player), broadcasts the show on Tuesdays at 9:00 pm (US central time).
If you try, you can probably find other places/times to listen to it, but I don't think it comes as a podcast.
Anyway, recommended listening. Entertaining and informative.
