My little neck of the computing world (workstations) had a different experience with ADA. We were constantly told ADA was coming because the DOD was demanding it, we constantly ignored writing any applications in ADA, and demands for it in our part of the commercial world eventually went away. I don't think we even shipped an ADA compiler, though third parties might have filled this need. We were a Pascal house, and in our estimation ADA didn't much resemble it. We liked the advantages ADA was advertised to have but weren't convinced it really provided them.
Our company was eventually acquired by Hewlett Packard, who I think paid more attention to ADA than we did, but HP botched our acquisition sufficiently that I decided to leave, so I don't know much about HP and ADA. But I do know tons of people from HP, and ADA never gets mentioned. --Percy

I suppose this is humorous: I just listened to the above video. I did not know, even though after doing a search I see it's been cited at EvC at least a hundred times, that the Treaty of Tripoli included the words, "the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."

I didn't get it either, but I thought it was n ≠ a/b, not π ≠ a/b. Hard to tell the difference in this font: nπnπnπnπnπ
Found a good pi character online, but it didn't survive the trip through the database, so I'll switch to the Courier New font. Here's the expression again: π ≠ a/b But a and b don't have to be integers for a/b to be rational. While being expressible as the ratio of two integers is the definition of a rational number (where the denominator is not zero), the opposite is not true. In other words, it isn't true that all ratios involving non-integers are irrational. For example, when a=1.1 and b=2.2 then neither is an integer, but a/b is still a rational number. I think the only constraints on a and b for that inequality to be true are that they both be rational and b be non-zero. And of course there are an infinity of irrational values of a and b for which the inequality remains true. And there are many values of a and b that will render the inequality wrong, for example, when a=π and b=1. Since I don't get the joke, I feel I am missing the point. --Percy Edited by Percy, : Couldn't use the pi character I found online.

PaulK writes: I think you’re inverting the logic Percy. There is nothing about the ratio of two non-integers there at all. There is nothing about the ratio of two integers there, either.
What it is saying is that n is not expressible as the ratio of two integers - which would make it irrational. Nowhere in π ≠ a/b are a and b constrained to be integers. There are non-integer values of a and b for which the inequality is also true. Maybe it's like this. People who get a/b as a reference to irrational numbers because it was part of the particular definition of rational numbers they were exposed to (e.g., a/b is a common way of defining rational numbers on the Internet) think it's cute and leave it at that. People who don't get the a/b reference because they were exposed to a different definition (e.g., p/q or "ratio of two integers") and have to have it explained to them will immediately note that theres nothing in π ≠ a/b that defines a and b as integers. The values of a and b that satisfy the inequality π ≠ a/b include more than just integers. --Percy

AZPaul3 writes: Are there values of a and b, whether integer, rational or irrational, that would make a/b=π? π is a number. Therefore 2π is a number. For a = 2π and b = 2, then a/b = π. Or for any circle with circumference a and diameter b, then a/b = π. There's a lot of inaccuracy out there on the Web. I repeatedly saw webpages declare that π is not the ratio of any two numbers. What they must mean is that π is not the ratio of any two integers, the definition of an irrational number. π can certainly be the ratio of two numbers as long as one of those numbers is irrational. --Percy

dwise1 writes: Just tried drag-and-drop. HTML doesn't seem to work that way. I use Outlook for email, so I tried forwarding the email with the suspicious attachment to my Google email account so I could drag/drop from an HTML context, but the forward never arrived, so I assumed it was blocked. So I forwarded an email with an innocent attachment to my Google email account, and that email arrived successfully. Upon opening it I was able to drag/drop the attachment into a folder. This was on my Mac, but I don't see why you shouldn't be able to do this on Windows, too. I later received a message from Gmail saying that the attempted forwarding of that email with the suspicious attachment had been blocked:
quote On my Mac I was able to drag/drop that suspicious attachment from the Outlook email into a file folder where I was able to open it using Emacs. I'm not familiar with internal file formats, but it included a filename with a .exe extension, so it would make sense if it were actually an executable. --PercyEdited by Percy, : Grammar.

As we're all well aware, the World Congress on Religious Truth has been meeting for the past few years to resolve all the differences and contradictions between the world's religions. Remarkably, all religions are participating, and by all accounts they've made remarkable progress and are expected to announce their findings soon.
Of great interest is one particular disagreement between Christianity and Islam. Based upon the Bible Christianity believes Jesus is the son of God, while based upon the Quran Islam believes that Allah could never have a son. I'm sure we're all looking forward to the Congress's final report which should result in a single world wide religion where everyone believes the same thing and religious disputes become a thing of the past. --Percy

Since I code on a Mac I use zsh, where the zsh stands for Zhong Shao, a Yale professor who was at the time a teaching assistant at Princeton. zsh is the first letter of Zhong followed by the first two letters of Shao.
zsh is a Unix shell, not Linux, but it works fine. There were a few missing functions I like that it didn't have or that it implemented differently than I like so I wrote my own scripts for them. zsh is fine and I never notice that I'm not using csh (my first favorite shell) or bash. What took a while to get used to is that history is shared across all active shells. --Percy
