Well if so, count me on the mailing list if you want my vote next time. Of course we all have to pay ourselves back. So the only thing it stimulates is my blood pressure and heart rate.

The limits seem generous, but aside from that what I'd really like to see is the bulk of the stimulus going to unemployed and needy people. People who have kept their jobs have much less need for stimulus checks.
perhaps this is theoretically so, but the cutoff should not be simply at having a job versus not having a job. Some jobs barely pa1y the bills...and we need a stimulus too. The bills have piled up this past year.

. Response To Needy People
I think you bring up some good points regarding my reasoning process on this issue. I think that I consciously or unconsciously view myself as a needy person in regards to stimulus checks. The buck can stop at some point, but I feel it should always be right above me.
I know that you have a decent lifestyle yet I also realize that you likely have some hefty expenses. Your property taxes likely are not cheap. That being said, I see no reason why everyone should not qualify for either a stimulus check or good unemployment insurance.
The real issue is government debt and how far it can realistiucally increase. I have always said that in Biden's term, we will see inflation...and possible abandonment of the US dollar if things get too far out of hand. The dollar coupled with our ability to create more of them with the stroke of a pen gives the US citizens an advantage which the world may not soon tolerate. Which worries me.

Re: . Response To Needy People
Here is the thing though. The top 10% of the wealthy can always find ways to avoid paying US taxes. They can live elsewhere and make sure that their holdings are diversified out of Uncle Sams reach.
It irritates me, but I honestly think we cant force them to pay. Isnt it true that they (top10%) dont actually pay that much on wealth but only on income?

Re: Democrats are inheriting another fiscal mess.
Keep in mind that the deficit is the shortfall amount in one budget year. The DEBT is the sum total of all deficits. The amounts are all off of the charts. This bill wont get paid due to the fact that every American owes close to $100,000 were it shared equally. One can only kick a can down a road while there is even a road.

Re: Democrats are inheriting another fiscal mess.
Because unlike our mortgage, the principal on this debt keeps growing...lately to the tune of over a trillion dollars a year. The principal is growing faster than even the possible payments could be.
Soon, every bit of the tax dollars collected will have to go towards paying just the interest. There is no 35 year or 50 year plan to pay the debt off.
I am no economist, but to me this means that eventually the government will have to admit default.
The US Dollar itself may well be the next bubble.

How Many Is Too Maany?
AZ writes:
we have the infrastructure for mass crossings. But not enough dedicated to the issue of controlled immigration humanely conducted.
I am all in favor of controlled legal immigration, but the challenge is as to how many people we should let in and at what rate?
One Night At The Border Shows How Immigrants Are Hoping Biden Will Treat Them Differently: “We Have To Take That Risk”
From the link:
quote:
People say, 'Don't come, it's too dangerous,' but there are no options for us back home," Kevin, a 28-year-old Honduran man who made the journey with his wife and son, told BuzzFeed News. "We have to take that risk."
Immigrants, especially an increasing number of children, are making a gamble that the confusing and disparate enforcement of border policies will mean they will be lucky enough to slip through and stay rather than be sent back to dangerous Mexican border cities, or separated from their loved ones. The higher number of immigrants being met by Border Patrol agents after crossing into the US have led to bipartisan calls for President Joe Biden to do more to dissuade them from making the journey in the first place.
But Kevin, who asked to only be identified by his first name, said he didn’t know what the political environment was in the US and maintained that he would’ve made the journey anyway. Holding his son in his arms, Kevin tried to calm his wife's nerves by reminding her to breathe. In a scramble to get out of the inflatable raft, she had fallen into the water.
Kevin was a barber in Honduras and made enough to support his family, but the coronavirus pandemic put him out of business. Then two hurricanes pummeled Central America, destroying their home. They tried rebuilding, but the double whammy of the pandemic and the hurricanes forced them to leave their home in January.
I am in favor of humanitarian aid as a moral duty, but I also know that there are limits. Its a bit like inviting people to stay at your house. You can support only so many. Too many and your life gets disrupted, your food gets eaten, your expenses increase, and you are forced to share with an unknown number.
Our people should have some say as to what that number is.
Percy writes:
...We should build up our ability to deal with the migrant influx until we can treat everyone humanely and compassionately.
And I maintain that in a literal sense everyone is too many. Again, it is like my house analogy and how many people you would be willing and able to let in your front door. It most certainly can never be everybody.
Granted we need a young and strong group of hard workers who will help support those of us old enough to retire on social security. Perhaps we need some sort of rule that in order to be allowed to work here, taxes must be collected and social security need be paid by these workers and future citizens.

Afhghanistan and Global Perspective
Recently a good article on NPR.
What The Exit From Afghanistan Tells Us About How Biden Sees The World
While Mr.Biden is preferable to Mr.Trump, this article explains how
NPR writes:
Nowadays, Biden speaks about the most important global struggle as a battle between autocracies and democracies. And Afghanistan isn't part of that equation. He's laser-focused on China.
And compared to previous presidents, some say, he also seems to understand the limits of American foreign policy.
"It is, in my mind, reflecting the president's views: This is a world abroad to be managed, not transformed or redeemed," said Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Biden's team often refers to this idea of creating a "foreign policy for the middle class" with a greater focus on how actions abroad will affect Americans at home, especially economically. Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told NPR in December that the Obama administration "did not elevate and center middle-class concerns in our foreign policy." Sullivan saw that disconnect as part of the reason for Hillary Clinton's 2016 loss to Trump and his "America First" nationalism.
Maybe what I am beginning to understand is that some of our middle-class support globalism if it is in the mutual interests of a global middle class (educated people, largely) who ideally engage in reciprocity rather than a zero-sum game. My gripes historically have focused on the dwindling favoritism towards people like myself. I lean more towards Nationalism than I do Globalism because I feel that as I age, my class interests will take a back seat to global programs.
NPR writes:
"I think there's a recognition that so much of the way that foreign policy was talked about and made in Washington had become completely detached from the kind of lived experiences of Americans," said Matt Duss, a foreign policy adviser to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
"And Trump kind of effectively zeroed in on that disconnect in a really divisive and racist and disunifying way. But still, he identified something valid," Duss said.
And the only reason I liked Trump diplomacy in any way was that he thought American interests were getting taken advantage of by foreign interests who benefited from us more than we did from them. Otherwise, I'm glad to be rid of Trump....but more like him will come if the small businessmen and uneducated retirees get passed over in favor of globalism. Am I again ignorant of the BIG PICTURE? Someone enlighten me. Respectfully, of course.

Re: Afhghanistan and Global Perspective
What's wrong with policies that benefit the world as a whole rather than just the countries with the most economic and military power?
Because our middle class is ultimately stuck with a huge tax bill (and debt bill) that, in order to pay, will reduce our standard of living more than the folks in other countries.
It would be as if you were suddenly slapped with $100,000.00 in debt and told that you must pay it back.
You focus myopically on benefiting the US and leave the rest of the world out of your considerations
I'm not ignoring the concerns unique to the world. I'm simply in favor of not selling our own citizens down the river while the world passes us by.

Re: The American military policy was not to support the Afghan people.
I have a question. Do any of the Afghan youth that joined the US military themselves have the ability to be evacuated along with our US personnel?
If not, I think that the US is not being fair to them. We should offer them amnesty, though I can understand that we cant pull everybody out without including their families. It is a very sticky situation indeed.

You're living in a fantasy world of conservative construction because it's much more exciting than the mundane world you actually inhabit. You've got this inner need to bring the message of salvation to the world, whether it be financial or religious, but you have enormous difficulty saying anything that is actually true. This is because you choose your facts based on who sounds most convincing to you rather than on actual facts. You're destined to be a sucker all your life.
I realize that you have a point, but will note that I do not listen to either Fox or NewsMax. I make up my own ideas.
Who is saying you'll be slapped with a bill for your share of the national debt?
Im saying that the figures are so going out of sync with reality that sometime soon, we will either default or China (or someone else) will dump their dollars and send the dollar itself into orbit. The game cant be played too much longer.

The reality is that you'll continue to pay taxes according to your tax bracket. Given your income ($27,000/year) and the standard exemption, your effective tax rate is almost zero.
My point is that it is irrelevant what percentage we have to pay. The reality is that the dollar itself will be the bubble that pops.

I'll admit that I dont know whether what I say is true, but I feel that I intuitively see the handwriting on the wall. What is puzzling to me is how the lot of you see no problem with the dollar bubble popping. Have you ever considered what will happen to your net worth and buying power?
Don't you want to protect your own interests or do you simply think that the bills will be paid and that if the rest of the world benefits more than the US it is meant to happen?

Re: Afhghanistan and Global Perspective
Your Chinese scenario has severe negative consequences for their economy. China dumping US treasuries would cause the dollar to drop a little but the Yuan to rise, thereby making Chinese exports more expensive internationally, driving down demand for their goods, and causing widespread Chinese unemployment, an outcome China desperately needs to avoid to maintain order. The consequences for the US would be minor as the dollars, the treasure securities, would easily find a new home. China only holds $1.1 trillion of US debt - total world debt is $288 trillion.
So what if China created a new digital Yuan and tied it to Gold? You DO realize that China owns more gold than they admit in official figures. Or do you think I fell for that lie also?
