I always assumed that the EvC Forum admin account led a quiet life. It never logs anywhere (including here), it posts the occasional message here, and it sends and receives email at admin@evcforum.net. So news of the admin account's double life came as a surprise to me today when I discovered that it had evidently been browsing the internet and been video'd watching porn. Here's the email it received:

Hello!
Unfortunately, I have some bad news for you.
Several months ago, I got access to the device you are using to browse the internet.
Since that time, I have been monitoring your internet activity.
Being a regular visitor of adult websites, I can confirm that it is you who is responsible for this.
To keep it simple, the websites you visited provided me with access to your data.
I've uploaded a Trojan horse on the driver basis that updates its signature several times per day, to make it impossible for antivirus to detect it. Additionally, it gives me access to your camera and microphone.
Moreover, I have backed-up all the data, including photos, social media, chats and contacts.
Just recently, I came up with an awesome idea to create the video where you cum in one part of the screen, while the video was simultaneously playing on another screen. That was fun!
Rest assured that I can easily send this video to all your contacts with a few clicks, and I assume that you would like to prevent this scenario.
With that in mind, here is my proposal:
Transfer the amount equivalent to 1350 USD to my Bitcoin wallet, and I will forget about the entire thing. I will also delete all data and videos permanently.
In my opinion, this is a somewhat modest price for my work.
You can figure out how to purchase Bitcoins using search engines like Google or Bing, seeing that it's not very difficult.
My Bitcoin wallet (BTC):
1Lg6nE6zFaMZHiPTFR9nSwuAL6hzeegToC
You have 48 hours to reply and you should also bear the following in mind:
It makes no sense to reply me - the address has been generated automatically
It makes no sense to complain either, since the letter along with my Bitcoin wallet cannot be tracked.
Everything has been orchestrated precisely.
If I ever detect that you mentioned anything about this letter to anyone - the video will be immediately shared, and your contacts will be the first to receive it. Following that, the video will be posted on the web!
P.S. The time will start once you open this letter. (This program has a built-in timer and special pixel ID - [№26627318])
Good luck and take it easy! It was just bad luck, next time please be careful.
Apparently the admin account has a contact list. Unless the admin account has monetary resources I'm unaware of it won't be possible for it to pay the BitCoin blackmail. I sure hope I'm on the contact list because I can't wait to see the video. I wonder if he really looks like Catbert.
The IP address of the email was 45.156.27.78 and comes from Moscow.

Yes, I get some of that kind of email.
Sometimes the email includes a password. And it is usually a correct password that I had stopped using several years ago and no that longer works anywhere.
I ignore such email.

They should run a few public information commercials to get people trained to ignore these things. A lot of people not used to tech are getting robbed blind by these arseholes.
I'm currently running at a recorded message phone call every other day telling me I'll be arrested by Revenue and Customs if I don't call them back.
A good tactic, by the way, if you do get a human being on the end of a phone call, is to say "just let me get a pen and paper", lay the receiver down, and then go and watch TV or sip a few suds. Wasting their time is about the only way we can hit back at them.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

It seems I'm on that list as well. But also on another. I have an overdue parking bill that has been accruing interest it seems for over a decade and unless I pay it an arrest warranty will be issued by the Cambridge UK police.
What is truly sad is that these scams tend to work or they would not persist. There are enough folk out there who will pay the overdue shipping invoice or bitcoin 'requests' or send money to the lawful attorney to clear the importation duty to make it worthwhile for a machine to spawn all these scams.

Wait, what?
Send money to a lawyer to payoff a duty so he could import a machine that makes scams? Come on, jar. You're pulling on me.
For $100 I'll go away.

Ditto. Mine are sent to an account I don't even use and goes straight to the spam folder.
I just ignore and delete when I take my spam out to the trash. And if they ever went through with their threat it would only improve my reputation anyway.

Guys, I kinda feel left out because I haven't gotten one of these emails. Am I not worth blackmailing?

If you say the word "gullible" slowly, it sounds like oranges. Go ahead and try it.

Maybe you're like me. Too dense to understand the scam so don't even know it happened and can't fall for it.
Some prince wants to send me money? Boy that would be nice. When is The Expanse on? Something about printing money. No, that's wasn't it. How about another glass of wine? {delete}

Check your spam folder. All the ones that were sent to me went straight to the spam folder without any direction from me.
Besides, they come from so many different "senders" that marking a particular sender as spam shouldn't have any effect. Kind of like how blocking the phone number of a spammer doesn't stop them from still trying to spam from other phone numbers (including fake phone numbers).

A few years ago I was on a Library computer when I got a popup from the "Canadian Police Service" (an organization I have never heard of). It claimed that I had been caught doing "one of the following" - child pornography, Internet fraud, etc. and my computer would be frozen until I paid a fine, I think it was $500, by PayPal. Sure enough, the keyboard didn't work, the mouse didn't work, Ctrl+Alt+Delete didn't work. (I don't know how they expected me to access PayPal.)
So I pressed the Reset button and the computer restarted.
