You're struggling to avoid it. You throw away Jesus' message and worship him as the Envelope that brought it.
The only argument we have had is interpretation. Jesus told the rich young ruler that he (specifically) lacked one thing. Which was letting go of his provisions. Jesus never mandated that all Christians or all followers need give up everything. If so, Mary and Martha never would have even had a house., Every follower (or believer) would be in effect homeless and wandering after the One who had no place to lay His head. Now...to be fair, we all are called to give up everything in the sense that we are no longer in charge of our lives. Jesus may tell ringo to up the spare change and sell the house, but I doubt He would leave ringo homeless....that would serve no purpose. Ringo, however...being a good little liberal would likely feel more comfortable with the suffering masses than he would living alone up on the hill with Mr. Potter. As for me, I try and listen to what Jesus tells me specifically to do. I don't always succeed. This is why I went into a rant over the whole concept of reparations in the other topic.

Jesus never mandated that all Christians or all followers need give up everything.
He barely mentions it...

Luke 18:18-30 ESV /
And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy. Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. Re: ringo needs John, Paul, and George.
You did your homework quite well. Disciples were required to give up everything. All were encouraged to do so. But again I ask, why did Mary and Martha even have a house?
Answer: They were not following Jesus as were the Disciples and as the Rich Young Ruler sought to do.
And when I ask ringo why he has not given up all he has I am met with the derisive comment that he is not a believer. Hypocrite.
Non-believers cannot hold believers to a standard.
It is between us and Jesus. I will admit, however, that based on scripture I have a weak case.

Nice try, but you need a better lawyer. He said it to anyone that would listen and a lot that wouldn't. If you want eternal life, sell all you have...

Yup
But again I ask, why did Mary and Martha even have a house?

I'm sure you can find wiggle room that convinces you; I'm just pointing to what you have to ignore in order to do so.
And when I ask ringo why he has not given up all he has I am met with the derisive comment that he is not a believer. Hypocrite.
Uh? I haven't given everything up either it would be a stupidly dumb thing to do. That's not hypocrisy, all we're doing is showing you that your book makes it necessary if you want this everlasting life nonsense that YOU say YOU believe in.
Non-believers cannot hold believers to a standard.
We absolutely can! If you say you believe in the book and Jesus, yet don't do what the book says Jesus requires of you, we are perfectly entitled to shout "foul".
It is between us and Jesus. I will admit, however, that based on scripture I have a weak case.
You have no case, it's his own words, sorry.

Why would different people have different standards for salvation? If one person MUST give up all of his possessions to be saved, how can anybody else do less?

Every follower (or believer) would be in effect homeless and wandering after the One who had no place to lay His head.
Pay attention: The early church - e.g. Ananias and Sapphira - SHARED what they had. Instead of looking for loopholes like Mary and Martha, why don't you think about the ones who were KILLED for holding back?

That isn't at all what Jesus said. He said to "sell what you have and give to the poor". He didn't say we have to give up control of our lives to be saved.

I can't be a hypocrite for not doing something I don't believe in. If I professed belief, like you do, and didn't follow up on that profession, like you don't, then I would be a hypocrite, like you are. Your "belief" is empty because you overrate the importance of the Envelope instead of paying the bill.

Because that is how you distinguish between The closest thing you have to understanding the character of Christ, if you argue that someone else knows more about it, what do you think their source is? Jim Jones, Charlie Manson, Jim Baker, Peter Popov, Malcolm X, Hong Xiuquan?
I beginning believe you will do anything to ignore the words of Christ because, like those twins in the WWitch, it would burn you.
Instead of cursing Christ, why do you prefer to wallow in a some fake form of Christianity that has no Christ?

Re: ringo needs John, Paul, and George.
Why should I listen to a character in a book?
Well, with that attitude, why read the book if you don't want to listen to what it says?
An author writes a book in order to say something. Most of the time, authors use characters to deliver that message. Therefore, the most important things in a book will be said by the characters. So if you refuse to listen to the characters, then you will not hear the message. And if you're going to refuse to hear the message, then why even bother to read the book?
That holds true even if it's τον Βιβλιον. Which tells us yet again that you do not want to listen to what the Bible says.

Honestly
OK, Dwise1, I will level with you. First, I always have believed that God does exist, from the first time I came to EvC in 2003. I was challenged in my thought process and asked to question my conclusions---repeatedly over these years, and I refused to publically do so, though in my prayers and meditations, I did. There are several possibilities that are Inconvenient Truths were they to actually be evidenced, and I will admit that I could be wrong in my thinking, my beliefs, and my world views.
Tangle will tell you that I am a doom and groomer, but I have confidence in my ability to discern truth in information. As far as God goes, we likely will never agree on that. Which is ok. A relief, actually. If we all honestly saw things the same way, we would either all be end times preppers or I would become less religious and more scientific.
You are a rational thinker. I dont expect any of my chosen apologists to sway or impress you in the least. I can even admit that I use large doses of confirmation bias to avoid any inconvenient truths which may or may not pop up. But lets talk another form of apologetics. Rational economics. I want you to listen to Surging Inflation Is Anything but Transitory – Ep 700 and using everything your rational mind can tell you about truths, cons, and rational economic theory tell me that Schiff is simply a con and not a legitimate voice crying in the wilderness. Ringo seems to not mind if the US middle class gets thoroughly fleeced nor is jar. I see it differently. I see a strong likelihood of another Great Depression and it is this one event that will trigger class warfare and a global crisis of confidence in humanity.
Even if Jesus and the whole mythos of Christianity turned out to be a human-created story, the reality of a global clash seems more imminent than not.

And you don't mind if the lower classes continue to get thoroughly fleeced, as they have since always. You don't even seem to mind being part of the fleecing as long as YOUR private hoard is protected.

But the Great Depression didn't trigger class warfare, Mr. Marx. And it didn't trigger a global crisis of confidence in humanity. If anything, it awakened a lot of people to the fact that we HAVE to have confidence in humanity because we can't trust the spooks to do anything for us.

If anything, [the Great Depression] awakened a lot of people to the fact that we HAVE to have confidence in humanity because we can't trust the spooks to do anything for us.
There's the old story of the man out on a walk and coming upon a beautiful garden with the gardener there at work.
"You and God have done a wonderful job here."
"Thank you. But you should have seen what a horrible mess it was when only God was taking care of it."
And there's the Call to Prayer in my Unitarian-Universalist church, which ended with:
" ... knowing that prayer does not change things, but rather prayer changes us and we are the agents of change."
Which is why only offering "our thoughts and prayers" never does a damned thing towards solving a problem.

dwise1's quote writes:

This is a good argument for believers avoiding parking their brains at the door. When we give our lives to Christ we don't instantly become brainless zombies. This is why I contradict my professed beliefs on a regular basis. I am an example of a human beset with double-mindedness.
