These solutions have a common problem: they require years of lead time. Maybe decades depending on the size and speed of the object. The PI method is going to require years also. It has to be built, but more importantly it has to be tested. How many tests? How many designs? If we want something that will penetrate the furthest, then depleted uranium would be the material of choice. I would think that penetrators combined with explosives could send shockwaves at frequencies that would pulverize it to gravel or even sand sized grains. There has to be multiple tests on many different types of objects, because right now we barely know anything about the structure of possible impactors. Would the energy from a really big impactor be transferred to the atmosphere, even if it is pulverized to sand, but still hits the Earth? This is kind of the scenario in the novel Seven Eves by Neal Stephenson. I hope this idea is given a fast track but I can't imagine any country or organization doing anything. We are making no effort to mitigate the tsunami of human caused disasters that are right here looming where we can see and touch them. The Earth's ecosystems are collapsing and we've had decades of warnings and humanity is plugging their ears.

Neutrinos Detected at Large Hadron Collider
For the First Time Ever, Physicists Detect Signs of Neutrinos at Large Hadron Collider The detector is quite innovative and I think we will learn a whole lot more about neutrinos in the next 3 years.

Black Holes May be the Solution to a Couple Big Questions
This article is about a paper proposing a new hypothesis of the Universe that may explain dark matter and supermassive black holes.

During the unfolding and tests there are over 340 single points of failure that still need to be passed. Watching the success of recent Mars rover missions makes me very optimistic, but I remember the terrible disappointment when the first light of Hubble showed terribly blurred images and we all realized something was wrong. The successes of NASA are just about the only thing that gives me hope for humanity's future. Merry Christmas!

Everything is functioning well so far in activating this incredible product of human ingenuity. There are some amazing robotics on the JWST. They probably planned for this, but why couldn't they have designed-in ports so advanced robotic spacecraft in the future could service it, add fuel, etc.?

Secondary mirror positioning today. I am interested to see if the Webb images will be as visually stunning as so many Hubble images. Hubble can point in almost any direction except close to the sun. Webb is a lot more limited because it has to maintain sun-shielding at all points in its orbit around L2, but Holy Crap, the light sensitivity and the resolution increase by orders of magnitude!!! This is the most exciting joint human achievement, maybe in my lifetime! We are going to see lots and lots and LOTS of things and events that have never been imaged before! We are going to confirm or rejects thousands of hypotheses in astrophysics and cosmology! ABE: Secondary mirror deployment successfully completed today. Edited by Tanypteryx, : No reason given.

JWST final course corrections 1/24/22
The JWST will enter a stable orbit at L2 on Monday! It sounds like it will still be several months before we see the first images. Any guesses what they will shoot first?
