In Canada, we don't even have armed guards in the banks.
The local banks I have been in here don't have guards either.
I remember being surprised many years ago on my first trip to Bolivia that there were uniformed armed guards inside and outside at the supermarket (HyperMaxi).
Banks had guards also, they unlocked the door to let us enter and locked it behind us, after they scrutinized our IDs. We got better exchange rates for our money at banks rather than with the scammers at the airport.
