What's really scary
I ran the whole computer network for the Coastal Resources Division of Georgia DNR. It was a Unix™ based system with a mix of Windows and Apple and XTerm workstations running off two NCR computers that were mirrored with failover. There were also several special purpose NCR computers dedicated to particular projects or tasks. Redundant T1 connection to the Internet and automatic nightly back up of all work stations.
For it's time it was amazing.
Now the connection to my house is faster and wider and more reliable, I have more storage online than all available to me at DNR with still a mix of Linux and Windows and Apple machines and it's just for me to play.
And I don't have to beg the State Legislature to fund another TB or three of disc; I just call Best Buy.
AbE:
That reads really really silly.
Had I gone to the State Legislature and asked for a TB disk they would have simply laughed. No one would ever need that much storage. Consider the 10.5" latest, greatest highest density 9 track tape reel at the time held about 50MB of data and was considered Gold Standard.
