I always liked Faith. She reminded me of a girl I once knew whose real name was Faith. And I always liked Buzsaw too, although I never knew any girls named Buzsaw. (I have known a few who might as well have been buzz-saws.) It's probably safe to say that I'm the most hated poster at EvC of all time, far more than Faith or Buzzsaw. You? You're not even the biggest idiot around here. You're more of a standup comedian: "But seriously, folks, Trump did a good job..." He wasn't too conservative for me. I didn't agree with him on many things but I could respect his views. He wasn't as rabid as you and the modern "Republicans". In his movies, he was often sympathetic to Indians and Mexicans before it was fashionable.
I always liked John Wayne movies, though he was a tad too conservative for me. Phat writes:

Less so than most in his day. (He died in 1979, you know.)
John Wayne was an admitted white supremacist... LamarkNewAge writes:
So do I. Saying that somebody "should" be better educated is not rabid.
... he attacked the education level of black Americans. LamarkNewAge writes:
So did I.
Remember, most blacks opposed the Vietnam war,... LamarkNewAge writes:
So am I.
... and Dr King was critical of far more than the single Vietnam War. LamarkNewAge writes:
I don't rest assured about anything you say.
You can rest assured... LamarkNewAge writes:
So do I. The troops shouldn't have been there in the first place, so I attack that too, but the way they were pulled out could have been handled better. ... that John Wayne would have attacked the Biden pullout of Afghanistan...."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

We weren't talking about history. We were talking about John Wayne. Learn your history, Ringo. As I tried to point out to you, it was a different time. White supremacy was a different thing when whites were supreme. Today, when whites are on the brink of losing their privilege, some want to take back supremacy by taking back rights from blacks, etc. That's a different thing from believing that blacks, etc. were not capable of handling rights."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

Don't put words in my mouth. Ringo thought John Wayne was making a call for more education funding in Mississippi .... My message was that John Wayne was more sympathetic to minorities than many or most people of his time. As for his politics, many or most Americans are rabid right-wingers today."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

That's good advice for anybody. Ringo needs to learn before he talks. It's also a good idea to listen to what people say instead of making it all up in your own head."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

Tell that to the bank. I dont want to take back anything from anyone. I would advise them to feel likewise. The slate is wiped clean. We've been through this before. Suppose your father leaves you a house but the mortgage isn't paid off. You don't want to "take anything back" - except the remaining payments of the mortgage. You want the bank to feel the same. You want them to wipe the slate clean. After the loan officer stops laughing, what do you think he'll say?
Phat writes:
See above. Making people pay their debts IS likely to make them mad. Is that a reason not to pay debts? Reparations are a liberal social cause that will only add fuel to a fire that has been smoldering far too long."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

Of course you are. Germany was still paying off its World War ONE debts until recently. (If it makes you feel any better, Hitler agreed with you.)
It is not my duty to pay my countries "debts" from times before my own. Phat writes:
Tell us how it isn't. If you inherit a house, how do you not inherit the associated debts?
The mortgage analogy is not applicable. Phat writes:
You seem to be confused about the distinction between legal and moral obligations. The laws were made by the same people who owned the slaves, so you can guess they would let themselves off the hook. But morally, if you inherit the benefits, how can you refuse to pay for them?
As far back in family history as i see we had no llegal obligations...morally or otherwise. Phat writes:
You can't throw a scum-sucking asshole like Trump out of office either if the scum-sucking assholes in the Senate don't vote for it. Refusing to do what's right doesn't stop it from being right.
You cant sock a national bill to individuals and make them pay except by 2/3 vote. Phat writes:
Again, think about what's right, not what you can get away with legally.
And its not our debt. If so one must legallydocument it and have the bill pass both houses. Phat writes:
You're arguing against paying your moral debts. And im not arguing against helping anyone except the justificatiin and method used."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

So, by your logic, giving black children a second-rate education because we "can't afford" an equal education is an economic issue, not a racial one.
Its not a racial issue. Its an economic and legal one. Phat writes:

The "moral high ground" isn't very high compared to the example that believers are setting. It's the old joke: We don't have to be more moral than the bear. We only have to be more moral than YOU.
My argument is that no government (especially a secular humanistic one) has any moral high ground.... Phat writes:
Nobody's "forcing" you to give up your beliefs. They're not even asking you to give up your beliefs. They're asking you to pay your debts.
... nor should people be forced to give up the beliefs that they have in their heart for the alleged benefit of all. Phat writes:
And you're wrong.. Remember the Good Samaritan? I believe that the rights of the family supersede the rights of government."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

Phat writes:
Let's walk through it again: Your predecessors owned slaves. They obtained work from their slaves and didn't pay for it. They certainly owed a moral debt to their slaves. And you inherited the benefits of slave labor. So how do you not owe a moral debt for your inheritance? Try to actually answer the question instead of just deny, deny, denying.
I owe no debts. Phat writes:
Do you not understand what MORAL means? You owe what you owe, whether papers were signed or not. And by the way, the slaves couldn't sign papers because they weren't considered people. You might as well talk about asking your lawnmower to sign a contract.
No mortgage was ever signed. Phat writes:
You contradict yourself. If the government decides to pay the collective "white debt" then it's your taxes that will pay it.
If the government can determine and agree to debts that it owes, that's not my concern. I pay my taxes. Phat writes:
It makes no difference how long ago he died. Any debts attached to his estate have to be paid by his beneficiaries. If you don't pay the debts, you're not entitled to the estate. I won't pay my great grandfather's back taxes after he passed 100 years ago."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

As you may know, in Canada we're going through a reconciliation process with our indigenous people. I expect it to take at least a generation (as the children of Israel had to wander in the wilderness for forty years until all of the older generation died off.) I feel like the one who is always stepping on people's toes and having to continually apologize and humble myself. One indigenous lady about our age said, "If you step on my foot, I appreciate your apology - but you have to get off my foot." Apologies are empty. If you do something wrong, step one is to stop doing it. Then you can try to repair the damage you've done.
Phat writes:
There aren't two wrongs here. There's one wrong and you're trying to invoke a statute of limitations on repairing the damage. Two wrongs dont make a right, however."I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper

YOU could just clarify instead of coming back months later to whine about it.
