The Indian death rate is actually far higher than official stats, most say at least twice or three times that. Crematoriums are jammed and are building pyres in car parks, public parks and on roads. Families are beginning to take care of their own dead. It's pretty grim.

Before 2019 it was widely known that vaccines that don't kill the virus can make it mutate into stronger variants. Since vaccinated people can still carry and transmit the virus, I would say this is most likely true. So what does the vaccine actually solve? In the long run more people may die. If this new variant gets round the vaccines, we're almost starting again from scratch. Informed speculation is that the current vaccines should prevent serious illness but everyone's guessing at the moment.

Looks like Europe is heading for lockdown. Netherlands already have, France and Germany closing borders with UK. London has declared a state of emergency. Infection rates are doubling every two days here though hospitalisations are still low. It's politically impossible to lockdown the UK before Christmas but afterwards if hospitalisations start to become everwhelmed it's very likely. There were early hopes that omicron might be less harmful than earlier variants but that doesn't seem to be the case. It's only the vaccinations that are saving us at the moment. But people are getting ill in large numbers all at once so our health services and businesses have an ever reducing number of staff. Keep safe folks, get your boosters. Depends how you count. With the vaccines and new antivirals there's be fewer direct deaths from COVID than previous waves. Our concern here is that because of omicron's much higher infection rate - something like x5 - our hospitals will be overcome with cases and a high percentage of medics and nurse will be ill and not working. People will die that needn't from all the everyday causes. It's not only deaths though, long covid is a nightmare too.

There's good news an bad news about this Omigod virus. Our boffins have found that it's between 30 and 70% less harmful (less likely to result in hospitalisation) than Delta but between 4 and 10 times more infectious.

My daughter lost her sense of smell by catching it way back pre-vaccines. 20 months later she's still got no sense of smell and taste. She's also got what in now described as COVID finger. There was a nurse on the radio the other day explaining how angry-making it was to be asked by a patient very ill with COVID "I'll have the vaccination now". A regular occurrence apparently. Too late I'm afraid.
