And it was probably less dangerous for me than walking to the library today.
Slippery out there?

It only takes one slippery spot for us old timers.
(And if I was paranoid, I might think the cars were all trying to kill me too.)
Yep, I fractured an elbow a few years ago slipping on the ice getting into my car

Re: New Omicron Variant
I saw on the news this morning that N95 masks are going to be available free from pharmacies across the U.S.
Here's how to get free N95 masks from pharmacies or community health centers
The story also mentioned that the masks have an electrostatic charge that makes them 10x more effective at filtering out particles.
My wife and I have been using N95 masks since they became generally available from Amazon, but staying away from other people has probably been the most effective strategy, along with full vaccination.
My wife has also perfected shopping online with curbside pick up for all our groceries. She has a spreadsheet, so she knows how much we have of everything and online price comparisons are a lot less time consuming than in-store shopping. She says she never wants to go back to pre-pandemic shopping.

Re: N95 masks
She anticipates it may be months before smaller health centers like hers get the N95 masks to distribute. She is hopeful but realistic.
Yeah, supply chains really have broken down in a lot of different ways during the pandemic. It has certainly exposed the deficiency of manufacturing of critical strategic supplies in the U.S. also.
Prices on lots of products have skyrocketed too. I use a lot of AA batteries in the electronic flashes in my imaging system. Energizer Ultimate Lithiums last about 4 times longer than alkalines but they are more expensive. The last batch of 100 that I ordered were $2.09 each, about 3x more than they were before the pandemic and take 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Re: New Omicron Variant
But I have not gone into a store in over two years now and have little or no incentive to do so in the foreseeable future.
Yep we are feeling the same.
I did go into stores during the cross country trip at the end of August, but it was limited and fast for essential supplies. And we camped the whole way too.

Washington State trooper who refused to get vaccinated dies of COVID-19
Washington State trooper who refused to get vaccinated dies of COVID-19
quote:
Former Washington State Trooper Robert LaMay, who went viral when he chose to quit rather than get vaccinated against coronavirus, has died of COVID-19. He was 50 years old.
LaMay joined the Washington State Patrol in May 1999 but was forced to retire in October after refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19. His final radio call, in which he told off Governor Jay Inslee, went viral online.
“Wish I could say more but this is it, so, State 1034, this is the last time you’ll hear me in a State Patrol car, and Jay Inslee can kiss my ass,” LaMay said in his final radio call, after which he dropped the radio, according to an online video.
The video was viewed millions of times and LaMay appeared on multiple TV shows, including on Fox News, where he said he and his family “don’t do vaccines.” His Facebook page was deleted last week when he fell ill with COVID-19 and was put on a ventilator.
LaMay’s condition continued to deteriorate and he died on Friday.
It's difficult to see this as anything but his own fault. To Serve and Protect the Public was clearly not his motto.

Ebola?
I wonder how the world will respond the next time there is an Ebola outbreak or some other really deadly disease?
Ten years later and they were still asking in the doctor's office if I had traveled to Africa recently, until Covid hit. I often pointed out to them that much of Africa is thousands of miles from where there were any Ebola cases. I guess it will be decades before we see that kind of public health response again, but I guess people dying of the screaming shits is scarier, though.

Re: Washington State trooper who refused to get vaccinated dies of COVID-19
He will be missed.
Apparently, not by Fox. They tried to make him into a celebrity and hero back in October, but news sources are reporting that Fox is not reporting the story that he has died of Covid. I am not going to watch Fox to see if that is true or not.

Re: Ebola?
The anti-mask anti-quarantine people will be demanding quarantine. And the anti-vax people will be demanding a vaccine.
Consistency is not their strong point.
These days I'm not so sure that they wouldn't scream "fake news" and deny that an epidemic was happening. There are anti-public health nuts denying Covid from their deathbeds.

Ice Hockey N95 Mask Tyranny
I just read that the Canadian Women's Ice Hockey Team defeated the Russians 6-1 while wearing N95 face masks.

The US Army's "pan-coronavirus" vaccine could protect against any COVID variant
A universal vaccine to end COVID pandemics? It's in the Army's sights
quote:
Omicron, the latest variant of COVID-19, has led to a surge in cases and hospitalizations, raising talk of fourth booster shots and variant-specific vaccines. But what if there were a universal coronavirus vaccine that protected against omicron and all new COVID-19 variants?
At Wednesday's press briefing, White House Chief Medical Adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci explained the term "pan-coronavirus vaccine."
Said Fauci: "There have been five SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern: alpha, beta, gamma, delta and now the current omicron. And so obviously, innovative approaches are needed to induce broad and durable protection against coronaviruses that are known and some that are even at this point unknown. Hence, the terminology 'pan-coronavirus vaccine.'"
In a surprise twist, it's not Moderna, Pfizer or any pharmaceutical company that is leading the research into pan-coronavirus vaccines -- it's the US Army.
The Army recently announced that its pan-coronavirus vaccine, the spike ferritin nanoparticle COVID-19 vaccine (aka SpFN) had completed Phase 1 of human trials. Publication of the results is expected in January, depending on the completion of the official data analysis.
I'll be Rand Paul is shitting bricks about this!

I just heard from my grandson, who is in the Red Horse Battalion of the Air Force, stationed on Guam, that he's recovering from a mild case of Covid. He's been in quarantine for more than a week and was fully vaccinated but not boostered yet.

Scientific American, Special Issue-March 2022
Scientific American has a special issue march 2022. How Covid Changed the World, Lessons from 2 Years of Emergency Science, Upheaval and Loss.
I have only read a couple articles so far, but it is good to see the whole pandemic reported on from many different perspectives and effects.
I have had some interesting talks with my 16 year old granddaughter about the impact this has all had on her life. The disruption of her 8th, 9th, and 10th grades in school and her social life has been tremendous. And this is a unique event, in that it affects every other kid on the whole planet and no one living has experienced this type of global catastrophe before. No one, not even the oldest of us has been through it before.
The kids seem to get it, they are all having their lives disrupted, all the kids everywhere, share this event.

COVID Infects Penis, Testicles and Prostate
COVID Infects Penis, Testicles and Prostate – Causes Pain, Erectile Dysfunction, Reduced Sperm Count
quote:
Multiple tissues of the male genital tract can be infected with SARS-CoV-2, reports a new Northwestern Medicine study in large animal models. The study, in SARS-CoV-2 infected-rhesus macaques, revealed the prostate, vasculature of testicles, penis, and testicles were all infected with the virus.
The surprising discovery was made utilizing a PET scan specially designed to reveal sites of infection spreading over time in a whole-body scan. Scientists didn’t know what they would find, but they expected to see the virus in the lungs and high up in the nose near the brain because people were experiencing loss of taste and smell.
“But the signal that jumped out at us was the complete spread through the male genital tract,” said lead investigator Thomas Hope, professor of cell and developmental biology at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. “We had no idea we would find it there.”
“These results indicate that the testicular pain, erectile dysfunction, hypogonadism, reduced sperm count and quality, and decreased fertility associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection are a direct consequence of infection of cells of the male reproductive tract and not indirect mechanisms such as fever and inflammation,” Hope said.
quote:
“Even if this is only a small percentage of the infected, it represents millions of men who may suffer from a negative impact on their sexual health and fertility,” Hope said.
Clinical studies suggest 10% to 20% of SARS-CoV-2-infected men have symptoms related to male genital tract dysfunction. This suggests tens of millions of men who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, especially those who had severe COVID-19, should evaluate their sexual health and fertility to determine if additional therapies could prevent or diminish future problems, Hope said.
They may not be able to get a hardon, but at least Bill Gates can't track their every move.
