Re: Goldfinger
The plot in the novel was reportedly to steal the gold. The movie changed it to making it radioactive.

I've seen the layout of the vaults on a TV documentary show. A central shaft into the ground with a multiple levels. On each level vaults radiate out; ie, in a central space you see maybe 6 to 8 steel doors and an elevator. Behind each steel door is a vault room filled with gold ingots. Basically, as I recall, they start piling the ingots on the far wall and fill the room. The walls are done in institutional tile from the 1930's, so no gleaming metal and catwalks.

They described that the gold is inventoried periodically which involves moving it all out of each vault room to count it before putting it back in. The logistics involved in just moving it from each vault are involved and slow, so trying to get it all out in a Goldfinger-novel-style robbery would have been virtually impossible, especially within the short time frame they would have had.

Re: Goldfinger
I think the book and the movie are different about what is to happen to the gold.

quote:
In the 1959 Ian Fleming novel Goldfinger, the titular villain, Auric Goldfinger plots to break into the U.S. Bullion Depository in a criminal plot called "Operation Grand Slam". With the help of several gangsters (including the Spangled Mob and the Mafia) Goldfinger plans to kill the inhabitants of Fort Knox by poisoning their water supply and then steal the gold.

Source: Fort Knox

But as the youtube clip (message 659) points out, the gold is a LOT of mass to move. I don't know how the book proposes to deal with that. I guess just steal a small part of the gold.

Thus (I hope) ends the topic diversion (but I doubt it).

Re: Goldfinger

Do I hear a problem with side issues, topic diversions, tangents from our man moose? Whence this passion to strike out at distracting sub-topics?

A man similarly obsessed once wrote, “Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering topic diversion; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee;”

Do you think it appropriate to denigrate the side thread by participating in its continuation? Is this a specific topic objection or is this more a general distaste of topic distraction? Other than a heavy voice, what other restrictions on topic creep are you prepared to implement?

If we get people to comment on this and build a substantial sub-topic side-thread are you going to hurt me?

Eschew obfuscation. Habituate elucidation.

Yep, the temperature of the vapor actually changes as each fraction boils off. I had a still in high school, made apricot brandy.

Isn't a black swan event by definition unpredictable? So how can you predict it?

I don't see myself as a liberal.

But liberal or conservative has nothing to do with believing there will be some sort of catastrophic event in the future. Religious nuts are more likely to believe in apocalyptic nonsense but I think it's mostly coincidence that they also believe in conservative nonsense. They're just more susceptible to nonsense in general.

I have a history of Nazi Germany that contains a photograph from the 1920s-30s of a group of protesters. One of them is holding up a sign that says (in German), "There will come a day of reckoning."

It did.

There are days of reckoning every day. Germany had several of them. Everybody has them.

The day of reckoning comes, the reckoning happens and then we move on.

I know you're wishing and hoping for the end of the world - but I think humanity is in for some days of reckoning that are much worse than that. And we may survive them.
