I lean on a hard hope: that our means of global climate disruption collapse before the planet becomes inimical to all life. As I near my own end, like Rutger Hauer in Bladerunner, I love life more than my own instance of it -- or my kind. May our civilization fail in time. Rationally I agree, but I haven't quite given up all hope yet that we will somehow get our shit together and save the planet, but then I look around. I have a 21 year old grandson stationed on Guam in the Airforce and a 16 year old granddaughter in high school. I despair for their future! My 2 best friends have grandkids too and we often worry together about them. If our species is ending, your way is preferred, extinction before we kill the Earth.

I attended a lecture by James Lovelock, I think in the early 80s. It was fascinating and he did a good job connecting various cyclic processes in earth's systems along with the effects life has on these systems and how feedback moderates changes, based on the data available at that time. This was also the same period of time when we were ramping up space based monitoring of the biosphere, weather and climate. We have been collecting data and modelling results with increasing resolution and precision at increasing rates ever since. I'm pretty sure I read a couple of his books too.

Will the tides themselves be higher because of sea level rise and would that cause more tidal friction (by higher I mean a normal tide of 3 meters changing to 8 meters)? We should be able to answer some questions if we look at the last glacial period and what happened to the rotation as the sea level rose, but probably a few seconds difference wouldn't be recorded in geological processes.

Happy Earth Day
I didn't see an obvious place to put this, but Happy Earth Day! It's going to be a hot one. I have a hard time feeling celebratory about the state of the Earth, at least with regards to the human impact on the planet! I'm just really glad i don't live in the tropics!
