The environment is the guide to whether any specific mutation is beneficial, neutral or harmful and whether the mutation spreads in the population or dies out. That determines how populations evolve.The guiding light for the environment is physics, chemistry. They draw the map evolution follows. And the goal of this guided process is directed toward reproduction. Because your view of “directed” and “guided” are borne of religious stupidity, not the energy requirements and flow of the universe.
