My friend says you dont know me that well yet hit the nail on the head. He thinks you are projecting. I told him that you are likely a self made man as was my Dad and are not as lavish towards your kids as were my parents. You would proudly let the government help them. But overall, by calling me a little man you are challenging me to grow bigger. I am half Puerto Rican and half New Englander. My whole life I have been stuck between two cultures. Never really fitting into either. I and many family members have suffered extreme discrimination. To see me I would look like a stereotypical middle aged white guy. I have suffered discrimination and hate just because of what my last name is and where my father was born.
Not sure what being a self-made man means. I put myself through college. My parents helped as musch as they could. I worked full time while attending school full time. I went to a well-respected catholic school and received my B.A.'s in History and Sociology in 4 years. I started my M.A. at a major university, but did not complete because of burn out and the stress of debt.
After that I had multiple careers, from selling suits to being general manager of a small chain of convenience stores. My last real job was a business systems analyst for a major health insurance company.
I am 60 and have not had a real job in 18 years. I married well. At that time my wife finished her medical residency and we moved to a small town. We decided better if I stayed home and took care of things rather than work for a minimal wage. Then the kid came along and I still don't have a job. I stay busy. Take care of the house, cook, and clean. We have 40 acres and heat with wood. I am always available to help out friends. I volunteer a bit.
So yeah, I am a self-made man. I have made myself into the man I want to be and that my wife and boys can be proud of.
I am not afraid of people taking my privilege. I have been extremely privileged in my life and hope I can use that privilege to assist people to achieve a better life. I will not be a scared little man.
