Re: Typical?
There are single cell yeast species that reproduce both asexually (i.e. cell division) and sexually.
My favorite sexual/asexual organisms are Hydras. They're multicellular but form buds that become new individual but they also produce gametes.

Yeah, Tucker's another one of those turds that won't flush. He spends his time worrying about the sexuality of M&Ms.

I am addicted to the flavor and smooth texture of chocolate, but I don't get enough of those sensations from M&Ms. I only eat chocolate once or twice a year. The best I ever had was hot pepper chocolate bars that we got in Ecuador.

Re: Typical?
It's common today that normal cells produce eggs or sperm that have half of genetics in each cell. And you go on about trillionth of DNA in a cell??? Keep making up straw men!
But let me ask you this: do you believe that different species have evolved meiosis seperately? Or do you think all species that have meiosis, are descendents of one common ancestor that developed meiosis?

"common", "normal cells", ... No.
Only a few thousand specially developed germline cells in your gonads do that. That is meiosis. The rest of the billions of common normal cells that are you are somatic cells and reproduce only by mitosis. Mitosis is when the cell duplicates its genetic material and separates into two daughter cells of equal genetic makeup.
Do you believe ...
The evolution of sex is what you are asking about. I don't have exact details at my finger-tips and would have to do some searching the net to find appropriate sources.
Or,
You could do your own research. Try "evolution of sex" on google scholar.

Re: Typical?
If you think germ cells are not normal, then that is your problem.
Normal is referring to them being diploid, having full DNA. Nothing else.

Normal is referring to them being diploid, having full DNA.
Then you are wrong.
quote:
It's common today that normal cells produce eggs or sperm that have half of genetics in each cell.
Normal cells (meaning the vast majority of the cells in your body) don't do that. Only very special cells do that.
Regardless of your semanics, there is a major difference between somatic and germline cells. Do you acknowledge that?

They are not anywhere close to normal. They are exceptionally special types of cells.

Re: Typical?
Yes, I said it incorrectly. I meant the germline cells, that produce the germ cells. The germline cells have the normal amount of two complete sets of chromosomes.

Re: Typical?
Fine.
You are questioning why meiosis happens? How it evolved?
But you don't believe in chemistry happening due to physically natural causes. You want to introduce magic, yes?
---add
Btw, in meiosis the gemline cell ends up not in two but in 4 gametes. Just fyi.
