The best thing on my Windows box was my UNIX utilities. Until Win10 went to 64 bits and don't allow them (or any other 16-bit programs) to run. When Windows screwed up its search utility (worked great and saved me many times up to XP, but wouldn't work starting with Win7) it was grep that kept me sane.
Most of my writing is text using a third party editor, Note Tab Pro. I only use Word for a few things, like forms I've created and my study notes for Russian. I remember from a C programming forum I mentored on someone getting errors on a short program that looked fine ... except there was something odd about that double quote symbol. It turned out that he had written the source code in a word processor, so I advised him to never do that again but rather always use a text editor for coding. On my brother-in-law's eMac, I was surprised to find a text editor, but I had to dig really deep to find it. When I mentioned it to him, he couldn't begin to imagine why anyone would need one (he's a PhD). One of my first word processors was WordPerfect which I loved and sorely miss. You could go into reveal mode and see the embedded formatting codes and even edit them directly to fix any problem. You cannot do that in Word.

Even the command names made sense.
make did what the name implied. grep was a general regular expression program ed was an editor and awk .... um and creat ... umMy Website: My Website

I learned grep as being the ed command for global/regular expression/print.
And awk was named for its creators: Aho, Weinstein, and Kernighan.

And why creat?

I actually had to look up creat(). It looks like a version of open() that just creates a file. So the name is a slightly abbreviated form of "create".
I programmed in C for nearly 30 years and never used creat(), so I didn't even remember it.

The parts for my computer rebuild came today.
Intel doesn't include a cooler or thermal paste with their processors anymore, who knew? I have a custom cooler that I will reuse, but I will have to drive to Salem tomorrow to get the thermal tape from BestBuy.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! Well, it turned out that I didn't quite get the RAM seated all the way into the slots/sockets. This is my 1st ASUS motherboard and I am not impressed with the RAM or expansion slots as they are a a lot more difficult to insert the component than my old Gigabyte motherboards.. My air CPU cooler would not fit so I installed my first fluid cooling system. Got it running and setting up the BIOS, and drivers, etc. and I should be off and running, but when I try and install the operating system I get a message that the system is incompatible. I was hoping to use my old graphics/video card because the prices are so high on them right now, but a new $500 dollar superduper graphics card should be here tomorrow and then if everything goes ok, a day of installing software and I should be back in business.
ABE: Meanwhile I'm missing out on getting images of several developmental stages of my dragonfly nymphs that I'd hoped to capture. They are thriving on microorganisms I rear in rainwater and pond mud buckets on my patio. Life is good when your nymphs are thriving!Edited by Tanypteryx, . Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! Yeah that image has been making the rounds on facebook the last couple weeks. And those are damselflies.
I'm finally getting some summer weather and the flight season is in full swing here. I have spent several hours the last 3 days knee deep i a stream with my camera. Yeah I was thinking they couldn’t really be dragonflies as their wings were folded back.

That particular photo looks staged to me. Over the last few years there have been a large series of popular images of charismatic small animals in "cute" poses. The first ones I remember were tropical frogs in the rain. It turned out that the guy who shot most of them glued his subjects into position.
It has been fascinating to watch how certain images go "viral" on social media and rapidly are shared thousand and sometimes million of times.Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned! Hi Tany,
You may have read about the giant lacewing (50mm wings, pretty big, eh?) found on an Arkansas Walmart facade a decade ago. It was originally mislabeled.
quote: But if the picture below is accurate, this lacewing's wings don't look like they fold over the body. Which is why it was mislabeled? Can you clarify?
