I don't believe in showering money on people who have not earned it, That would be the major psychological hang up that prevents many solid economic policies from gaining popularity. It's the same root cause as to why most Conservatives are against social programs because they don't want money going to people they don't like. Let's look at it this way. Jeff Bezos' is worth about $135 billion. That's enough to buy every homeless person in the US a house worth $250,000. If Bezos and Musk teemed up they could buy every homeless person their own house and they would still have billions of dollars left over. Just two people could easily house all of the homeless. That's how out of balance the economy is.

Phat writes: For starters, the "group" should never be taught that they are owed something. Everyone should be taught that hard work and obedience to the same set of rules as everyone else is the way that a system is supposed to work. No one should ever be discriminated against, and better awareness of the scope and reality of the injustice should be the goal of public information. There it is, what we all knew was coming, the horrifically inhumane and discompassionate declarations, the sole exception being, "No one should ever be discriminated against."
Unfairness...discrimination..is an ugly reality which needs to be dealt with. How do you propose dealing with racially driven discrimination whose expression comes from feelings that are part of people's inner makeups? You've ruled out reparations, and I agree if for no other reason than that if today you compensate someone for all past discrimination then how do you compensate them for the discrimination they experience in the future? More reparations down the road? It would be unending. Women are in the same boat, earning 82% of what men earn, being promoted 14% less often, etc., all while being the object of unfair treatment as well as physical and sexual abuse. Legislation and the rule of law doesn't work either, because too often the people in charge have the same mindset as the perpetrators and don't even perceive the discrimination as wrong. So what are we to do about it? I propose that we can't give up simply because we can't think of effective means of addressing the problem. Probably freeing our nation of racism and sexism are unattainable goals, but ideals are there not because they're achievable but because keeping our gaze on them guides us in the right direction. --Percy

I want fairness but I don't believe in overtaxing the middle class while helping the lower class and watching the rich sit on the sidelines. So do you agree that there is a problem NOW that needs to be addressed? So come on over to our side and advocate for taxing the Rich. The rich already pay the lions share of all taxes collected. Im certainly not against taxing them more, but what ends up happening is that the bill always get presented to the earnings class one level below the Forbes 400. Im not in that class either, but the more the upper classes get taxed, the more they will shift the bill to the masses.
The bottom line is that we ALL are in debt to our society, ourselves, and our planet. And the bill is unpayable. Soaking the rich wont eliminate this giant bill, at this point. We all are screwed.

Another thing I worry about is the mandatory taxation of all global citizens. It will likely solve your challenge of taxing the rich, but it will force everyone on the planet to comply with a one world financial system. This is no mere Charismaniacal fantasy. It is quite possible and sooner than anyone thinks.
I do not like the idea of government knowing where every dime I have is and being able to access it.

I will draw out $21,600.00 a year.
I will have to check what I have paid in over my lifetime. Its been over 30 years of earnings, however.
I think you don't know what socialism is. Ive examined the term several times. Why dont you tell me what it is?

And what about those who haven't "earned it"? Or what about those who earned it but then through the vagaries of life find themselves entering their retirement years with nothing?

Phat writes: Another thing I worry about is the mandatory taxation of all global citizens. Except for some extremely rare examples, like Monaco, all global citizens are paying mandatory taxes. If you are talking about other countries taxing US citizens on money they make in the US, then you are living in a fantasy world. Countries are sovereign and the country is the only entity that can levy taxes on its citizens for income they make in that country.

Phat writes: Percy writes: Phat writes: Secondly, I am not nor have ever been against limited socialism. We need a police dept. We need a fire dept. Police and fire departments not only aren't "limited socialism," they're not socialism at all. I think you don't know what socialism is. I've examined the term several times. Why don't you tell me what it is? Why do you think police and fire are "limited socialism"? Socialism is state ownership of business and industry. It is a common mistake to confuse social programs with socialism, but the only thing they have in common is the base word "social." Republicans like to accuse Democrats of socialism whenever a Democrat uses the word "social" in a sentence.

Or what about those who earned it but then through the vagaries of life find themselves entering their retirement years with nothing? What do you propose that we do? You said we only "need retirement for those who have earned it," and I was only making the point that we need retirement for everyone, not just those who have earned it. At present the indigent elderly who are not taken in by family or friends become wards of the state. The elderly are at significantly higher risk of becoming homeless than any other age group. Needless to say the survival rate of the elderly out on the street is not good.
I will draw out $21,600.00 a year. ... I'm one of those who is entering my retirement years with very little. (Under $20,000.00) You have insufficient funds for retirement. Your condo might prove a valuable asset if it is worth enough. For example, a reverse mortgage might provide an additional $10,000-15,000/year. Or a sale might provide funds if a less expense living arrangement is possible. You should talk to a financial adviser. --Percy

Your argument is. The rich won't pay taxes anyway so why bother?
The rich already pay the lions share of all taxes collected.
They also have the vast majority of income. That is a ridiculous statement. But your statement is incorrect. They pay the vast majority of income taxes. Why should one party in a two party system control the amount of tax that ALL of the people must pay? If the tables were turned, you wouldnt like it either. You would likely prefer supporting your own causes.

Are you an idiot? Do you have any idea how government works?
Since I live in a red state but I am a registered Democrat I should not have to follow laws passed by Republicans? Also, this stupid shit is totally irrelevant to my post. Just more of your straw man and gish gallops. How about you read what people post and respond to what they post. Also, read your posts before you submit a reply. If what you have to say is stupid or nonsensical maybe you should not reply at all.I seriously did not think you could devolve even more than you had. I guess you are evidence that there is no bottom. I should feel guilty egging you on, but you are such a vile, disgusting, self-centered snowflake, that spouts hate against people I care about I hope my taunts drive you crazy. Why should one party in a two party system control the amount of tax that ALL of the people must pay? Back in 2003, I was paying taxes that supported a war in Iraq that I considered immoral and unjust. But I paid the taxes and didn't whine about it, because that's the way that Democracy works.
Phat in Message 214 in another thread:
Why should the guy passed out under the park bench have an equal share with the hardworking father or mother who holds down 3 jobs? Phat in Message 336 (this thread):
Im one of those who is entering my retirement years with very little. (Under $20,000.00) With that little to support your retirement, you are likely to end up as the guy passed out under the park bench. Your conservative friends are going to say "Why should we be taxed to support that guy under the bench." Your conservative Christian friends will likely be saying "Thank God that I am not like that guy under the bench."--> -->Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity <-- <--
