Like most people here, the beliefs I hold now formed slowly over time. Actually, it wasn't so much the forming of beliefs as it was the falling away of beliefs I came to realize were not true.
When I was maybe 10, for some reason a book about the French Revolution sat face up on the floor in our hallway for a few months. I had read some it and understood that what we knew of the French Revolution came from people who had been there and observed events, and from artifacts and documents. Then on Sunday while reading the Bible I wondered how we knew about the events of the first couple chapters of Genesis. Who were the observers and what were the artifacts and documents? One day I realized there were no answers to these questions.
Those who understand they're accepting a religion on faith are thinking clearly.
Those who believe their religious beliefs have been proven are fooling themselves.
Those who believe that for which there is evidence tend to have more time on weekends.

Religion causes you to believe falsehoods and to act on those falsehoods to the pain of humanity. Theism must be excised from the collective mind of our species because it always, ALWAYS, leads to war.

I upvoted Message 860 because the meme seemed to ring true. I began to question Christianity after I started reading the Bible for myself. If I had been content to go with what others told me, I might never have had those doubts.

There is with AZPaul3. What else would you call it? It is straight up anti-theism. Its not enough that he doesnt believe. He insists that future generations be compelled and persuaded NOT to believe. To me, that looks like anger.
It certainly makes me angry to a degree, because I happen to believe that its a crime to not at least give future generations an opportunity to decide for themselves with no pompous critical thinker encouraging them to doubt and feeding them a bunch of propaganda from mythicists and other skeptics all the while avoiding having them persuaded by an apologist from the other side.
You(your side) says that religion is a myth. (as if that were a fact) You (your side)says that all wars are caused by it. (Lets start with Ukraine. How has religion fueled that war?) Many anti-theists mock God and mock the very idea that such a Being could even exist.
To be fair in this argument, I will admit that the theists themselves do not help their own cause these days, starting with their behavior.

I disagree. When I became a believer, it was not because I believed what others told me. I hardly knew them and would not have chosen to hang out with them. I was not fooled into accepting something(someOne) that did not appear to be real as real. I FELT AND EXPERIENCED THE CHANGE. The change was subtle the first day but was absolutely a 180 degree turn the next day. Perhaps the main difference between myself and many of you is that I did not question it. Why should I? I felt better than I had for many many years. Had my church at that time been openly political, I would have seen through that charade. What they taught was that a relationship with a higher power was personal and real.
Recently , I have lost a lot of that. It has made me a cranky person. I think I am like an adult child, rebelling against old age and refusing to take responsibility for my inner growth.
Ironically, a bunch of atheists and secular humanists helped. Even though few of you believe that Jesus is alive and real, you caused me to think it out for myself. Time will tell where I end up.
All that that old orthodox priest is doing is ritualistically blessing the guns. I suppose that it could be inferred that the message was that killing the enemy was ok with God. Those soldiers would do the same thing Priest or no Priest, however. Perhaps they just needed assurance that God would accept them despite their profession. Would you rather have drones or heartless zombies killing you?
