I love both cats and dogs, and like my father before me, they seem to love me, too. I think dogs love me because I communicate with them on their level, while cats love me because I do their bidding and call them Master.
Our cat of many years died at age 18 last year, and we now have two 7-month old Bengal kittens. We'd love to have a dog, too, but we're never home and most dogs crave companionship. Or would the cats be sufficient company? --Percy

Evo side. Dog, cat, and ferret person. I've never got too excited about fish, but most other pet-type critters are pretty much OK by me.

Mr. Jack writes:
quote: Not entirely; you should consider a hairless Chinese Crested. They're rather expensive, but well worth it. Since they don't have fur, there's no dander to upset allergies and there's no shedding. It takes weeks for them to build up any noticeable odor; a bath about once a month, using human shampoo, is sufficient to keep them clean. They're easily housetrained and can even be trained to use a litter box. They are very intelligent and exceedingly loyal to their owners. Once they have formed a bond with you, they will allow you to do anything to them. This quality makes for easy grooming and no-fuss visits to the vet. They also get along well with other dogs and cats.

Yes, Percy, as I was telling Mr. Jack, at least my breed gets on quite well with cats. My cat provides him with companionship while I'm away. They're both very happy animals.
I've had collies in the past and they are also quite friendly toward cats. A rough collie is a high-maintenance pet, though.

Wow! What an interesting breed. I am reminded of Japanese anime, for some reason.

Hello, all.
Evolutionist and cat person. I like dogs, too, and get along with the neighborhood dogs quite well, but I like to garden so owning one is out of the question. Current household: The Hoover, named for her eating habits, is fourteen now and frail but still the bane of field mice and voles, and Stinky, named for his litter box habits, who's nine and loves to ride on your shoulders. My wife convinced him he was human at an early age. We lost a 20-year-old calico two years ago and my dear Lowell last year at 15. No new additions until Hoover joins them in the garden.

I also am allergic to cats, but frankly pets aren't for me in general.
Revelation 22:16 - I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Yeah, I had never heard of them until the early 90s when the breed was accepted into the AKC. They are absolutely the most amazing dogs I've ever encountered.
There are two varieties of Chinese Crested: hairless (which really means furless) and powderpuff. They occur together in the same litter. The powderpuffs are cute dogs, but the fur makes them like other dogs in terms of odor. These dogs want to be near you all the time. That's okay with my hairless because he doesn't stink. Fleas can't hang onto him. He sleeps on my bed and will sometimes crawl under the cover if it's cold. I couldn't tolerate that with a furry dog. You have to be a fairly social person to like the CC because wherever you take him he will be the center of attention.

I've changed my avatar to a pic of me and my dog. I wanted to show one more pic of the dog (Pepper) in his biker threads:
That's a Harley-Davidson jacket he's wearing.

The idea that cats are vicious, snarling creatures while dogs are wonderful, adoring pets simply haven't found the right cats and haven't been playing with most dogs.
My cat, Qatt (pronounced "cat"), was the most adorable cat in the world. The Lenny of the cat world...weighed about 20 pounds. Not fat...huge. He could easily stand up on his hind legs, put his forepaws on the table, and take a look around. But the sweetest cat in the world. He loved you, he loved me, he loved linoleum. Every visitor would have him flop down on their feet, belly up, begging to be petted. My parents first Boston Terrier, on the other hand, was extremely anti-social. Of course, she also realized that as a Boston Terrier, she wasn't that big (my cat was bigger than her) and thus she was going to defend the house from over here. The house had a circular track and the dog on more than one occasion, having barked at the visitor from the living room, would then go around through the dining room, dinette, family, back to the hall so she could approach from behind, sniff his heel, and bark anew. This was quite different from their second Boston Terrier who, like my cat, loved everyone. Loved others so much that if she got out of the yard, calling her wouldn't bring her back if there was anybody else around. Better to play with the stranger. Too, my parents' cat was fairly aloof. Whereas my cat loved playing, she was much more content to sit and snooze. Of course, she also took pleasure in torturing the dogs...at one point being very careful to sneak up behind one while she was eating, take a good swipe at her rump on one side, only to disappear the other way so that the dog had no idea what happened. I'd love to have a dog, but my life doesn't really allow me to. I live in a condo with no yard and am often gone for 12 hours at a time. A cat, even a needy, clingy cat like mine, can handle that. Leave out food and water and they're smart enough not to eat it all in one sitting. A dog, however, is going to need more attention lest it act out its loneliness by chewing and digging everything.
