Well, there are some kinks to be ironed out of the new system.
The "Welcome, Visitors!", "Practice Makes Perfect", "Short Subjects", and "Suggestions and Questions" forums method is unchanged. To start a topic in one of those forums, click "Post New Topic" at either a topic of that forum, or the index page of that forum. To start a new topic in any other forum, one must use the "Proposed New Topics" forum as a pathway. Click on the "Post New Topic" button at the above cited (or the "Post New Topic" button at any existings "Proposed New Topics" topic). The "Post New Topic" buttons at the forums such as "Geology and the Great Flood" currently do still work, but only for admins and moderators. In the longer run, I think we will need prominent "How To Start a New Topic" links available, which will lead to an instruction page, which will in turn lead to the appropriate "Post New Topic" buttons. In the meantime, I guess we try to keep this message near the top of the "All Topic" index page. Please post any discussions of these changes to the Structure changes, most forums closed to the starting of new topics (4/13 - No longer pending) topic. See message 1.
Adminnemooseus ps: I have just noticed that Rocket has submitted a new topic at http://EvC Forum: Information -->EvC Forum: Information. It's been there for about 11 hours, unnoticed by me. OOPS! I'll have to evalute it right now. We shall see how long it takes to get into a debate forum.

In the meantime, I guess we try to keep this message near the top of the "All Topic" index page. This seems a bit labor-intensive. You might want to ask Percy if there's a software add-on that allows "sticky" threads that automatically stay at the top of a forum. See the iidb.org discussion forums for an example of what I mean (I know it uses different software than evcforum).

Sticky threads are on my list, but it's a long list. I'm currently in the middle of a large update, not quite sure when it'll be complete, but when I'm done I'll pick the next highest priority item from the list.

I don't think there should be a time limit on nor should it matter how long it takes. There will NEVER be an "emergency" new topic.

Message 1 repeated:
quote: The is now also the How do you all feel about the new posting rules? topic, to discuss the new system. Yes, the system is clunky. About the only way to find how to start new topics, is to read this topic, or see my "signature". The bottom line is, that you need to use the "Post New Topic" button at either the "Proposed New Topics" index page, or at an existing "Proposed New Topics" topic. New improved "Start a Topic" links need to be put into place, but that's a software modification (Percy/Admin's area). I can't do it. What was the reason for this new format?
I know alot of useless topics are posted but this sure slows things down alot... You might lose alot of people... just a thought.. |

bump with question:
I don't know the process, bu do you need to post a reply to the proposed new topics (the ones that are moved to other forums) to close them? I would prefer them just be closed and the the notice on the newly moved version (ie -- no duplicates)?

The message 2's are automaticly created when the topic move is done. By edit, further information can be added. To all - See message 1, if you're looking to start a new topic. If we can set aside our differences for a moment, my original percpetion of this was on target. It's being seen by some as the "Farenheit 451" of web-sites. You have what?, three or four people determining the format, structure, and path of discussions....this is not Jr. high school. I think you are trying to make a good product, but remember what you are producing...a web-site that is condusive to free flow of thoughts and ideas, not a razor wire fence to package organize and categorize acceptable and unacceptable ways of thinking in the minds of a few.
Please take this as constructive criticism.

I am fairly frustrated with the closure of topics for drift.
buzsaw finally responded to my post in a thread, but the topic was closed before I had a chance to respond, (even though our exchange was pretty much on topic--women and Christianity). Now I can't just cut n paste his reply to me in a new topic in order to respond. I have to have my topic "approved" by the moderators. I want to respond to Buzsaw NOW, but I can't. What if my topic isn't approved? Then all of the stuff he said that need to be addressed will never be. I don't like the idea of the moderators deciding what is an acceptable topic before it is posted, and I don't like interesting conversation squelched because it has strayed from the subject of the OP. That's the way discussion works naturally, for cripe's sake, unless you want the whole board to follow completely formal debate protocol. --unhappy schrafinator

Look at the Netscape message boards...one of the top five most active/popular message boards is (you guessed it) EvC...and it's been there for over 3 years. They dropped board monitors over two years ago...and since then;
1)Things go waaay off topic and naturally come back on topic eventually.2)Trolls are taken care of by the posters by ignoring them. 3)There is occasional foul and disgusting language and proposals...posters take care of it by ignoring it. 4)New posters aren't intimidated by a monitor with warnings and a death key. From what I've seen, boards with NO control provide just as good a service (it even seems better) as boards with relentless authoritative controls....what do they call it?..."topic control measures"?
