Sic - Wikipedia
I was told (wrongly) it means 'spelling is correct', it is used to indicate that where you have quoted someone you have done so correctly even though what they have written is arse.

It's great that you asked; I'm normally too embarrassed to ask people to explain terms which I'm not familiar with, and have ended up totally not understanding whole conversations because of a single word.

Look it up!
I don't understand this. You are sitting behind a computer that's hooked-up to the internet, the greatest repository of knowledge mankind has ever had in its entire history.
Why can't you simply look things up?

Re: Look it up!
Because that only enlightens me. I didn’t know. I’m sure there are others lurking who didn’t want to ask (and also didn’t think to Google it ( so shoot me)) So I asked and got a reply ( in the coffee house too) and now all those here that didn’t know do and knowledge is spread.

Why can't you simply look things up?
But you're doing it yourself!
You could have gone here instead:
Why people dont lookup things - Wikipedia
The main reasons why people don't look up some things on the Internet are:
- they are Internet-newbies
- they are too dumb
- they are too lazy
- they have no time
- they want to appear dumb or lazy or in shortage of time
- they are desperately looking for social contact

Re: Look it up!
Or they simply don’t think to when they are in an online community of people they respect who use the phrase in question frequently . .
so I it could be argued I DID use the internet to get the answer.

Well, I guess I had no time then. (I refuse to admit that any of the other reasons apply.)
P.S. And because I am not lazy, I clicked on your link. You are wicked, Annafan.

one could do a search on "(sic)" and skip over the results that lead to this topic ... or try wikipedia?
but I know one sad old man that uses it profusely ...

sic
Way back when in Latin class I was told that it is short for a phrase (the entirety of which escapes me) which is translated as "Thus in the original".
Much like the notation "i.e" represents "id est" meaning "that is".
Both of the above are dependent on my memory be accurate, which is chancy at best.
