Thursday will be Darwin's birthday. He was born in 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. Here you'll find information about Darwin Day celebrations around the world. Unfortunately there will be no celebration anywhere near me (Vicksburg MS). The man's name is far too controversial here. It's such a shame considering all that Darwin has contributed to human knowledge in science, medicine, etc. Since no celebration will be available here I got to thinking it might be appropriate to simply do something outdoors Thursday. If the weather's nice I may take a ride on my bicycle through the national park here. Happy birthday, Chuck.

Go out and take your dog for a walk. You know - a Voyage for the Beagle.

I wasn't even aware of this. Thanks for the heads up berberry! Let's see...if he were alive today, he would be turning 195. Only 5 years left to the big bicentennial anniversary. Happy birthday, Mr. Darwin!

Hunh! There doesn't seem to be anything planned in Snyder, either! Maybe next year....though I might be the only one at the party...

Don't be followers, be doers. Go out and organize the best damn Darwin Day celebration this country has ever seen! You can try and book his Darwin's Giant Galapagos turtle as a special guest.

Churches observe Darwin day
Nothing has been posted on this, so I'm giving it a bare bones mention. I believe it was an outgrowth of the "Clergy Project" (we got a topic somewhere, but I can't find it) which collected "signatures" of clergy who support evolution theory. A substantial number of more mainstream (as opposed to fundamentalist) churches made a point of including support of evolution theory and opposing fundamentalist creationism, in yesterday's (2/12/06) services. I plan to hire the local town hall on Darwin Day and arrange a banquet and Darwinian passover. As Justin suggested, I'll have a bow-tie wearing Giant Galapagos turtle walk aimlessly between the dining tables. It will have a platter strapped to its back, upon which rest a pyramid of Ferrero Rochers, representing the flesh of Darwin. And we'll partake in drinking from the glass of primordial soup, representing the blood of Darwin. This is going to be the best Darwin Day ever!
