I am a relative newcomer so I am interested to know who people think is the best dabater in the following categories -
A) Hardcore creationist
B) Pragmatic believer
C) Pragmatic disbeliever
D) Rampant atheist
Just a bit of fun really so as I know whose posts to look out for and so that people can potentially be complimetory to others who they have spent much time and effort disagreeing with.....
The categories are as flexible as people want them to be so feel free to come up with new ones but lets avoid any wooden spoon type categories in the name of positivity
Acceptance speeches optional
Take it easy

Modulous, Percy, and purpledawn.
All three can debate well. Rarely do any of them let the debate get personal.
They can decide their category for themselves.
Cheers.

For hardcore creationist I'd give the Golden Gish Award to Nemesis Juggernaut.
With NJ you get a real discussion. Even when he gets frustrated I sense a good faith effort to come to terms with evidence. He stands his ground in a discussion but isn't afraid to adjust. His sense of humor is refreshing. (That Darwin avatar he posted on the EvC map is a howl.) Yet you can be sure that, once the man is on the court, he'll keep hitting the ball back. He's here for a volley.
All of which is saying a lot in this category. You so often see people argue by decree. And fly-by-nights who paste up sermons and leave.
NJ's one of the people who makes this place a community.

keeping an eye on . . .
It's worth mentioning in the 'creo' category that eggasai, if he or she hangs around, could emerge as a premier science debater for the ID position.
Right now some remedial work needs to be done, it seems, on some of the science involved. As a nonspecialist lurker I have no complaints there--the education is good for me, too. If that work gets done and Egg finally puts a thesis out there for his/her own position, we could be very well served in the discussions that follow.
It's too soon to tell. Discussions so far, though, have generated some outstanding science posts.

Archer
I find Archer Opterix a very good debater in the religious forum. Well written.
His posts tend to have the feel of "wow, wish I'd said that".
I don't think he has lost his cool...yet.
I also agree with Archer on NJ.

C) Pragmatic disbeliever

My Nominations
I have not been around long enough to have formed concrete opinions but first impressions -
A) Hardcore creationist - Juggernaut Nemesis for a more considered approach to full on creationism
B) Pragmatic believer - Jar for having a consistency of logic that is hard to break down
C) Pragmatic disbeliever - RazD for the appliance of science
D) Rampant Atheist - Not sure if he would be happy to be described as a "rampant atheist" but Archer's posts against irrational belief and in favour of science in a philosophical sense are some of the best I have read here.

And the winner is----
Never cared much for celeb parades. Being human, if someone doesn`t get a mention, hurt feelings tend to change the board. I regard everyone here as a contributor to EVC, some at an early stage of articulating, some as great specialists at their trade, some witty, some perceptive, all getting some benefit. The vain get shafted, the ignorant get informed, the pugnacious get jail time, the believers (all types) get challenged. Long live EVC.

Poster of the Year?
For the last couple of years we have had Poster of the Year threads/contests. I'm not sure if this is meant to be that kind of thing?
I think Nemesis Juggernaut is by far the best hardcore creationist debater I have seen at EvC. Faith is extremely well written, but NJ seems to give a debate more effort.
I can't really comment on the rest, as I can't sort the categories/contestants out in my mind. Outside of hardcore creo, people tend to get tangled up depending on what the subject is.
Oh wait, I will say that I found Ben to be on of the most pragmatic disbelievers. He debates from what I would describe as that position extremely well.
I don't think I have seen a hardcore atheist here at all... or at least any that would stand out as best debater in that category.

I'm honored by the mention, Straggler. The 'rampant atheist' category brought a smile, though. I'm really a better candidate for 'alternative philosophy' if we have one. (I'm Tao Jia.)
For a real rampant atheist... hmmm. We've got some good ones. I'll have to think about that. I'll be interested in seeing the other names that come up.
I'm with you about Jar. And Phat and PurpleDawn kep him good company in that category.
The categories in the OP come from religious/philosophical leanings. I learn a lot here from our science specialists, though--people like Wounded King, Quetzal, NosyNed, Modulus, RAZD, Crashfrog, roxrkool and Percy. I think the scientists are the engine that make this thing go. I know little about most of these individuals' stances on matters existential or metaphysical and that's okay. We all benefit from their sharing their expertise.
Nighttrain makes an excellent point about the importance of the contributions everyone makes. That's the kind of thing that makes a place a community. I hadn't been here long enough to realize 'celeb parade' was a genre. I saw this thread as a chance, as you put it in your OP, to tip our hats to people we're grateful for but usually too busy debating to thank.
Thanks to everyone for a great neighborhood.

This is one of the reasons I had a hard time naming anyone. I wasn't as sure about people's rel/phil position as I am with people being good with logic or evidence.
As far as science goes, to my mind the top contributors have been roxrkool (who no longer seems active), perhaps melatonin (who no longer seems active), and certainly cavediver.
The top contributors for logic, I feel would be RAZD and you. I like plenty of others (including many who have left EvC) but for eloquence or detail in theory you guys max out in that category right now.
Of course these things always change over time, with some people burning out and some people getting better, then changing again. No one can hold the edge forever.
I have not seen enough of straggler, but from what I have seen the pseudonym doesn't seem to fit. I have liked all of straggler's posts so far.
I do feel bad that so many enjoyable, and frequent, writers don't get mentioned when these things come out. I always feel like I'm shafting people in the back when I don't mention everyone, and oh man if I forget someone if I attempt a full list. Jazzns, Chiro, Tusko, and mark24 are just 4 examples of people that I think I don't give enough explicit kudos to, and they really deserve. Now I'll go hate myself for not mentioning still more.

The posts I saw here by Ringo had a lot to do with my returning to EvC after my first visit. Pithy, perceptive, and hilarious. Ringo can say in four sentences more than I can say in eight paragraphs. I liked how most of his comments were questions. The gunslinger avatar fit his posts perfectly.
No category. The Lawman is a class by himself, as always.

See, that's what I'm talking about. Ringo completely skipped my mind when considering who I might overlook, and he certainly deserves credit.
Mark24 is the specific person who brought me back to EvC long long ago. Lots of people do now, even when I can't seem to remember all their names.
