Abe: I ended the experiment a bit early; thanks to all who participated. I'll do my best to inform everyone more about the experiment later. Thanks again!
Hi all,
As some of you may know, I'm taking some graduate classes this semester. I'd like to get into a Ph. D program... For one of my classes, we have to write an experimental paper (due: TOMORROW). I created an online experiment and thought I'd ask y'all to run through it. If you would please please do it, that would be awesome!!
Here are the rules:
  • Only once per person please!
  • The experiment is anonymous and confidential; I won't be sharing individual results with anyone, and I ask for no identifying information
  • I do log IP addresses to make sure the same IP address answers all the questions for each "subject ID". It's just a double-check to make sure I didn't royally screw up.
  • There are no qualifications or limitations about who can do it. That means YOU can do it!
  • Please do not discuss the experiment with anybody who hasn't taken it! Especially do not post information about it here. After I finish, I'll let y'all know, and you can discuss away or request answers from me. But the results will get skewed if you all post information about it.......

I would really appreciate anybody's participation. All you have to do to get started is to click on the link below. Remember the paper is due tomorrow night... so if you're gonna do this, please do it now!!

Thanks a million!
Ben

Done
but maybe I want individual results -- since I am nosy.

Re: Done
Thanks Ned
Since you basically tagged your result via the time-stamp of your post (assuming you posted just after finishing), I can probably whip up an individual result for ya when I do data analysis tomorrow.
I also plan on providing details about everything after the experiment is done. But for now... I demand silence! (slams iron fist down)

I did your test. I don't think I did very well on it, I think I do better with logic if the concepts aren't abstract things like letters. Its been a while since I took math studies as well.

Please hit this while you can! I've got all the data analysis tables all set; some histograms are just a couple of clicks away. Thanks to the many who have participated already, and thanks to Jar for helping keep this topic current!

?
I take issue with this statement:
quote:
Did you know that 'not a consonant' means 'a vowel'?
'Not a consonant' could also mean 'a number'. It could also mean 'an apple' or a 'Ford Fairlane'.
Sorry, but I couldn't finish the test since I couldn't make any sense of the questions.

People who think they have all the answers usually don't understand the questions.

Re: ?
It does make a bit of nonsense of the question. I am not a consonant, but I'm pretty sure I'm not a vowel, either: I'm a psittacula with health problems...
Abe: Does the fact that many people find me odd, mean that I can never be even-handed?

Re: ?
Ringo316,
Thanks for the comment and the participation in the experiment. I appreciate your time.
Unfortunately, you don't know my experimental conditions, manipulations, or what I'm trying to show. That's why I asked people not to post information about the experiment; if someone reads information about the experiment and then takes it, depending on what's been said and what the experimental conditions are, you can actually affect the outcome of the experiment.
Next time I'd appreciate if you can send me a comment in email, or if you can simply wait until the experiment is done before posting a public comment about the contents of the experiment. Since I can't know if people are reading your comment before taking the experiment, I'm actually going to have to end it earlier than I wanted and ignore results I received last night after your post was made.
Thanks for participating (really). Next time I'd appreciate it if you could be more careful. I explictly asked people not to do this in the opening post because it's really important.
Ben

Re: ?
I'm sorry about the security leak. (I really did read your instructions, but I was interrupted the first time I tried to take the test. When I came back a few hours later, some of the information had leaked out of my brain.)
On the other hand, I have to wonder about the validity of an experiment with such a glaring (to me) error built into it.

People who think they have all the answers usually don't understand the questions.

From Ben's response it would seem that any 'error' may have been intentional.

Yes, I suspected (after the fact) that it was. My confusion was of the nature of: How can I finish this questionaire in the light of this error?
Intentional or not, the error made it impossible for me to answer the question. Unfortunately, my innate nit-pickery overrode my memory of the instructions.
My apologies again to Ben for my screw-up.

Re: ?
now that the experiment is over (and we all await the results with barely abated breath), I'll say that I noticed that and made a similar conclusion to nwr: that all the "info" on each page was part of the manipulation.
there were also several ways I saw to go through the results.
