My daughter is beginning to look at colleges, and she'd like to attend a school with an equestrian program. Horses are recreation to her, she's not a serious rider, but it's her most fun hobby. She goes to horse camp every summer for the entire summer, and beginning last year she was a junior counselor. She wants to major in English, and she'd like to be a writer.
Any recommendations out there? --Percy

Schraf HAS to be the font of all knowledge on horsy things.
Although, making a fun thing work, makes a fun thing work, Y'know? At the same time, making your work your most fun thing.. I love evolutionary theory. It is one of my recreations, but to make a conventional study of it would spoil it for me. I would be held to to horrible things like, gah, timetables & such... It would become a chore. What retreat would I have? My advice, although I accept it's not everybodies, is to keep the equines a recreation. I think it's a personality thing. Schraf is sure to disagree. But if your daughter thinks she can make a separation, then great! She's a better man than me (!). But IMHO these things "sound" better in the mind than in actuation. English has more applications. Be a generalist, they have a better survival rate. Mark There are 10 kinds of people in this world; those that understand binary, & those that don't

It sounds, though, that Percy's daughter does want to keep things recreational. Percy, what I would advise is to send her to the best English program she can get into in the Northeast. I specifically mention this region because, as I am sure you are aware, there is a longstanding, vibrant tradition of equestrian sports there. Most colleges and universities in the NE will either have some kind of equestrian club or team, or there will be a nearby private training facility that she can take lessons at and maybe they will want her to teach the up-downs on the weekends if she wants to do that. She does hunters, right? This message has been edited by schrafinator, 02-03-2006 11:03 PM

Schraf,
Well, if everybody kept their equine involvement recreational, then there would be nobody to teach us how to care for, train, and safely ride the things. I'm not arguing. My point was that an English degree opens more doors than a horsey one, that's all. I wasn't being sniffy about equestrian pursuits. Thanks for the help. She doesn't do hunters, or if she does I've never heard of it. I thought maybe I could get some specific recommendations. My daughter has a list of colleges with equestrian programs, but I've heard of almost none of them, so I don't know which are the good ones academically. Would it help if I posted her list?

Sure, you can post a list, although I'm going to know more about the equestrian programs than the english departments.

Any recommendations out there? University of Minnesota at Morris is widely regarded as the best public liberal arts college in the midwest, has a great humanities department (I know a fair number of the faculty and my father chairs the department), and maintains full stable facilities right on campus. (You have to bring your own horse.) It also doesn't cost an arm and a leg but I wouldn't offer that as a major selling point, of course. Not to her, anyway.
University of Minnesota, Morris More shameless boosterism for a school that isn't even my alma mater: they've got an amazing international study program and they just recently renovated their science facilities (with a multi-million-dollar grant.) Minnesota might not hold considerable appeal to your daughter, but it's not any colder than NH, and Morris isn't that boring.

Hi all, here's the narrowed down list of colleges my daughter is considering because they have equestrian programs, except for the first one which she's only considering because she heard good things about it (not from me, I was surprised to see it on her list, but as a legacy she has a good chance of getting in):
Myself, I'm most interested in the academic quality of these institutions, and I'll pass on any equestrian program info to my daughter. --Percy

The only one I know about firsthand is the U of Miami.
They have become quite a force in the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Asosociation) and she could get really involved with horses and competition (western, hunter seat equitation and Dressage) if she wanted to while in college there. Like, they have a big instruction staff, facilities and everything. I won my Intermediate equitation class there, though! I read a bit about the USC coach and she has a strong Eventing and Dressage (=good basic riding technique) background and I like the pictures of her riders posted on the website very much (they look like they know how to ride and not just sit on a horse and equitate). Also, USC lists Equestrian as an actual varsity sport, which is great for funding. College of Charleston seems pretty into the hunter seat equitation IHSA, but no dressage. They have it as a varsity sport, too. Pepperdine looks to also be a hunter seat equitation school, although I can find nothing about who the instructors or coaches are. It is nice in that there are varying levels of participation within the club; competing, non-competing, etc. Hope this helps. I think she needs to decide the following: 1) How much do I want to commit to riding? 2) How much do I want to show? 3) Do I care if I am riding in huntseat equitation classes as opposed to dressage? 4) How intense do I want the overall experience to be, and how much does it matter to me to advance my skills as a rider at this time?
