OK - let's say we have a character that can control light (let's not get much more complex than that), let's call him Dr.Light.
Another character shots Lightning at it (bear with me!) and he is able to catch/deflect/control it. Now my knowledge of Lightning is limited but would he be actually able to do that? My understanding is that the visual bit of lightning is not actually connected to the electric current bit? It's more of an indicator of where it's been (charged ions or the like?). Sorry if that's bit of a ramble but I'm a bit in the dark about this (pun intended). Anyone able to help me out or even able to understand what I'm on about? The last line of the strip pretty much sums it up. "Creationists make it sound as though a theory is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night." -Isaac Asimov

My question to you is what good will the ability to control light do aside from not allowing someone to see something?

Blinding people, tanning people, sun-burning people, making people mistakenly believe the weather is suitable for a barbecue, the list is endless.

Or... why not get really advanced and create images of things that aren't really there? I mean, everything we see is actually just light hitting our eyes, so if you could truly and fully "control light" you should be able to create illusions galore.

My guess is that they're using a justification that goes like this:
Lightning = electricity = electromagnetic spectrum = light I'm not saying that it's not bullshit, but that's probably what you would hear if you interrogated the author about it. I'm of the opinion that it's about as bullshit as Magneto being able to fly.

Magneto can't fly. He can, however, levitate anything that's made of metal. By wearing metalic objects on him, he can create the illusion that he is actually levitating. This is most apparent in X-Men 2 during the scene where magneto escapes from prison.
I'm of the opinion that it's about as bullshit as Magneto being able to fly.

I am moving you into the seat beside Guido, and we need to get a good teacher! Lam? Where are you? Sorry if that's bit of a rambleNo you are not! You like to ramble! but I'm a bit in the dark about this (pun intended). Anyone able to help me out or even able to understand what I'm on about?Good puns, BTW! Are we gonna go scientific and talk about lightning or are we gonna go SciFi and find out more about the elusive Dr. Light and his buddy, Buzz Lightning? If so, and if the visible is really invisible until defined in our minds, would it not follow that we only think that we can imagine anything? In reality, what if image is an outer reality that we merely define? Or... why not get really advanced and create images of things that aren't really there? I'm more interested in the Lightning bit - what is it that we see?
My understanding is that the visual bit is basically a indicator of where it has been not where it is.

It was 2 a.m. The preacher carefully put away the hymnals where everyone earlier sang a stirring rendition of "I saw The Light." My question to you is what good will the ability to control light do aside from not allowing someone to see something? He realized that by telling everyone more about the light, they saw something in him that shone on them....blinded them, really. He laughed. So he had them fooled! Soon, all of their money would be his, as well as their souls! His enthusiasm was interuppted by a tremendous clash of thunder! He ran to the window and looked out...when a sudden blast of lightning knocked him out. They later found him, stiff as a board and still clutching the song pages of "I saw the Light"...burned a bit more, now.

Charles, this is all that I could dig up...
http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/...sci/1993/general/GEN015.HTM I am still "in the dark" about our hero Dr. Light. Whatever happened to him?

He's actually a bad guy - It's not something I'm writting he's a badguy in a DC Comic. The other half got me an interesting book on Superhero Science and I was wondering about the "control" of lightning as the book never covered it.

Magneto can't fly. There was, however, some crap plot in the early nineties where Magneto was controlling people's minds by controlling the flow of blood in their brain (via the iron in blood.) At twelve years old, I knew that one was bullshit. "Creationists make it sound as though a theory is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night." -Isaac Asimov
