I simply despair of my country if people like this are ever allowed into power.
My unspoken fear is that they already are in power.

The Agony and the Irony
Great link!
abc13.com writes:
It is ironic in the truest sense that a fictional book on book banning is now the target of a request to remove it from school curriculum.

I'm not so sure it isn't.

One of the interesting complaints was...
"talking about our firemen" as reasons the book should be banned
Our firemen? Did he not understand that firemen in that book burned books, or do they seriously have such firemen where he lives?

What you need to be aware of is that, in the UK at least, nothing an American says or does surprises us anymore.
America is rapidly becoming known as the land of the nutball because of people like this.
It is a pity because it is the tiny minority that is getting you lot tarred with the nutty brush.
Your president doesn't help matters either, he is the laughing stock of the world, except we shouldn't really be laughing.
Brian.

That's frightening.
I was thinking more from personal experience. At uni and conferences I have met and spoken to literally 100's of Americans and they were all 'normal' people, equally dismayed at creationism.
The only oddball types are the ones I have met on here and at other boards.
You must dispair for your country.
Brian.

"With God's name in vain being in there, that's the number one reason," said Diana's father Alton Verm. "There's no reason for it being read."
I'm afraid I'm going to have to come out in support of Brother Alton on this one. There is no reason for any book that takes god's name in vain to be read and all such books should be banned. We could start with the bible.

When I was in high school in Detroit, J. D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" was banned from the entire city (It had that fucking "f" word.) The book immediately sold out in all the bookstores in all the neighboring towns. Every kid I knew had a copy. I'm sure we would never have heard of or read the book without the ban. But we learned a very valuable lesson: How to get around stupid government actions. Isn't learning such lessons what school is for?
(Does this post date me? Maybe I just heard about this from a great uncle.)

Of course he didn't understand.
He's an ignorant religious hick.
And yes, I know that "hick" is a perjorative term.
It fits.

Interesting timing. Last Friday, the English Club here had a "banned book sale", where they were selling copies of books that were banned somewhere or another.
If someone doesn't want you to read it, then you probably should.

That's a great point. It funny too, that the reaction to being told not to read something is to run out and read it. How can people be so stupid!

Of course he didn't understand.
I thought maybe they had it all organized down there.
Believe it or not I've been to real live book burnings. I went with a sense of humor, but those around me probably didn't figure it out. Them people can be nuts.
I should have tossed in the Constitution or the Bible just to see what they'd've done.

You don't burn books to stop people reading them. The whole purpose of burning books is to demonstrate to your neighbors what a righteous and upstanding citizen you are.

Why is it that our Christian (neo) Conservative friends never comment on threads like this?
Is it that they agree with these folk or are they embrassed to be associated with them?

Of course, biblical creationists are committed to belief in God's written Word, the Bible, which forbids bearing false witness; --AIG (lest they forget)
