Announcing the EvC Forum Chat Room. The link to the chat room is in the row of links at the top of the page. Please let me know what you think. I looked at only a couple chat room options. This one seemed pretty good, but I'm going to let members decide whether we keep this one or find a better one. I'm in the chat room now, join me!
The chat room will only work with Java enabled browsers, as it uses a Java applet.
Passwords are not required at present.

Well, it seems to work. You can even set up your own subroom, if you want to have a private chat.

Pretty sweet
Interesting to chat in real-time... somewhat intimidating...
right, and as the resident software tester... here's the evaluation:
All functions look cool, EXCEPT.. the "float" function is pretty useless.
If you use the "float" function to move the chat window to it's own window (which frees up your web browser), as soon as you use the web browser to navigate away from the chat window, the chat logs out. So the "float" function is completely pointless. At least, that was the case with IE 6.0 (keeps "float" window open but logs you out) and Firefox 1.5 (closes "float" window) on Windows XP Home.

It seemed okay, at least with mozilla tabbed browsing.
I had connected to chat in a separate tab. Then I went to float. That allowed me to use my browser, with the float still present.
The restriction: I had to keep the chat tab available, but it did not need to be currently visible.
Presumably you could do the same by starting a second browser window, and going to chat on that. Then float. Then you could allow your chat browser window to be hidden behind your main browser window, and still watch the chat via the float.

Re: Pretty sweet
Right. That would work. Starting a second window removes the entire usefulness of "float" (at least without tabbed browsing). With tabbed browsing, I can see how you can work around it.
No big deal anyway. Just worth mentioning I thought.
OK, I'm heading back in!

What I would find more useful, is a private messaging feature (whereby I can send an individual message to another user).
That would allow me to send a comment such as "message 23 is ambiguous, I suggest you edit to clarify".

Wow, this is great
A chat feature has so many advantages I feel like quoting Thomas Huxley - "How stupid of me not to have thought of that." This may well aid in cutting down on some posts since people can 'thrash out' some of the smaller things and chat to admins without cluttering the boards.
Hurrah.
However, there is the dark side: moderation. Chat rooms breed drama like creation/evolution sites. A creation/evolution chat room has the strong potential to reach critical stress and explode. Chat rooms add an extra level of 'personalness' to these things, and plenty of people cannot cope well with that transition and can get very upset in real time chats whereas on the boards they may feel more psychologically able to go away and chill out for a while.
Suggestions:
1. Integrating user names on the board with the chat. Using something like this authentication script
2. Perhaps try ICE - the moderation on it is meant to be better...but I don't know if it's worth the extra cost.
3. Possibly get some chat room mods? I guess we need to wait to see if they are needed, but I suspect they will be, just to keep things civil.
4. A whole new set of rules would need to be made about what kind of content we should have in there, and how it intends to be used.
Anyway, it looks great right now - hope it gets utilized well. Thanks Percy.

What browser / version are you using?
You may have Javascript disabled or you may need to download the Java virtual machine... let me know what browser...

Re: Can't see it
It's connecting to port 8008 on the chat server. Maybe you have a firewall blocking that port.

IE 6 and Opera 8
IE gives me the X box, Opera makes me try to log in again when I get to that page.

Re: Can't see it
The login screen is the right thing; put any name in there, and you don't have to use a password.
I'll think about the IE problem...

I am using Firefox and there seems to be an issue using the chat with
tabbed browsing. If I open up the chat applet in a new tab then whenever I switch back to one of my other tabs the menus and the chat boxes show up through the tab I am looking at, and anything I type is put into the chat box.
TTFN,
WK

Another Firefox user...
Seems to work fine WK, do you have the latest Java? You may want to check it out at Sun's home page.
