Author | Topic: Site Down Time | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

EvC Forum will be going down tomorrow, February 16, 2009, at 8 AM Eastern Time so that the website can be moved to a new server.
I estimate down time should be about 2 hours. You can begin checking if it is back up around 10 AM. When the site comes back up, use this temporary link for access:
You will need to use that link (which has an IP address in place of ) for a day or two because it takes the change-of-address for the new server from 24 to 48 hours to catch up.

I think the switch has already happened. I'm browsing the site just fine using the standard address.
{abe}I take that back. After posting this message, it booted me to the IP address, and then forced me to log in. (Gr)Egg on my face, I suppose.{abe} Edited by kuresu, : No reason given.

I cannot.
It all depends on the name lookup refresh rate of individual servers around the net and which service provider you use tec. etc. Some providers refresh more frequently than others and some servers will just happen to have refreshed soon after the change regardless of interval. In about 48 hours (usually nearer 24 I think) most of the interweb should have replicated the change around.

It works on the old address for me, so all seems well. Not only that, it's loading quickly. On the old server, it was often slow, sometimes very slow. And there was a lot of down time. Hence the title of this post. Good move, Percy.
It'll be interesting to see if the rate of people joining increases noticeably, and the general traffic rate.

I forget if I've already mentioned this, but the old server was a very old 1.2 GHz Pentium 4 running Fedora 1.0. The new server is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core (dual cpus) running Centos 4.7. I'm hopeful that it will prove to be more robust and reliable. For web hosting software I'm now running Plesk instead of Ensim, still feeling my way around.
The name server update hasn't propagated to my ISP yet, but I'm glad to hear that at least one person seems to have it already.

Yes mine was not working on the normal address until this evening (UK/GMT about 8pm) but it is now. So the changes are definitely circulating around.
Thanks for your efforts Percy. It's appreciated. Just out of interest what is the OS on the new server?

It's running an open-source version of Redhat Linux called Centos 4.7.
I don't have any evidence that email is working yet. I set my account to receive email notifications and I'm not getting any, but this could be due to the gradual propagation of the name server information. If anyone receives an actual email notification please let me know, it would help confirm one more thing that is working.

Looks like there's a problem with the timestamps. The times at the top of the page ("Session began", "Page Loaded", "Current time") are OK, but the times on the posts are 3 hours ahead.

I got one when Parsamonium replied to my reply to him in the "Techy question" thread. So it's working for me.

Evidently the name server update has propagated to my webserver but not to my local ISP, so my notifications got sent here instead of to the old server.
This means I won't be reading email until the name server update propagates to my local ISP.

Whoops! Still understanding Plesk's control panel, timestamps should now be correct.

timestamps should now be correct. I noticed they were off. Try this glitch:
... If you use the message reply buttons (there's one at the bottom right of each message): ... your message is linked to the one you are replying to (adds clarity). You can also look at the way a post is formated with the "peek" button next to it. It seems the images are missing - email me?

Well done, Percy. Please don`t ever change the colours, contrast, post number in thread, etc., all the little things that make EVC a joy to read.
