Quotes, Links, Reply
I do this a lot, so I thought I would start a thread where tips could be provided for new people to peruse and for experienced posters to reference (using peek and copy the codes).
Here are my most common ones:

type [qs]quotes are easy[/qs] and it becomes:
quotes are easy

or type
quotes are easy
and it becomes:
quote:
quotes are easy

also check out (help) links on any formating questions when in the reply window.

Go to Proposed New Topics to post new topics.

type: this message is linked to an url
and it becomes:
this message is linked to an url
Long urls force the page to be wider than the screen, and thus make reading the posts difficult. Please edit the one you have in Message 1 so we can read the page.

If you use the other reply buttons (there's one at the bottom right of each message):

... your message is linked to the one you are replying to (adds
clarity). You can also look at the way a post is formated with the "peek" button next to it.

the horizontal line is created by using

You can use to capture the whole screen and to capture the active window.
Then paste into a slide program where you can modify it if necessary and then export the slide as an image or into paint and use save-as.
(Print Screen) is left over from the dos world (pre eukaryotes) and it would cause the text (of course, you think computers need pictures?) on the screen to print.

... tips about posting pictures and where to host them may be appreciated. Deep links (to the jpg on some website) should be discouraged for a number of reasons.
Enjoy.

Damn, I didn't know that... That really was helpful. Great thread, RAZD.

“There is something which unites magic and applied science while separating both from the 'wisdom' of earlier ages. For the wise men of old the cardinal problem had been how to conform the soul to objective reality, and the solution had been knowledge, self-discipline, and virtue. For magic and applied science alike the problem is how to subdue reality to the wishes of men: the solution is a technique; and both, in the practice of this technique, are ready to do things hitherto regarded as disgusting and impious" -C.S. Lewis

    Color, Size, Image, Thumbnail
    Different font colors are fun.
But so is different font sizes.
    Images are fun too.
    So are thumbnails

    Subtitles
Since this is intended for tips, it would be helpful if the subtitles reflected the tips within.

    INDEX page
it would be helpful if the subtitles reflected the tips within.
Good idea, then this page becomes an automatic index of all the tips.

Google Site Search - find lost posts etc
You can use google to search any website for specific key words.
On this site you can use it to find lost posts ... if you remember enough key words in the post that would be unique
Use site:http://www.evcforum.net either at the beginning or end:
... plus any key words you want to use.
    Enjoy

Using thumbnails to control image sizes
To control image size using the thumbnail function use
    [thumb=600]http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/3677/chromosomesonetofivefo3.jpg[/thumb]
    and it becomes:
You can still access the full size picture by clicking on it, thus information is not lost in the reduction to fit the pages here.
You can use almost any number to set the width, the default is 80, but the maximum should not be more than 700 to fit most screens, and 500 would be better. The image is also automatically centered (cool feature Percy!).
Note: using this to make small pictures larger will result in "pixilated" blurring.
    Enjoy.

Table that thought and KISS me
[ Table dBCodes are now available, see Table dBCodes Help. --Admin ]
For the adventurous, how to make a table with HTML:

(NOTE: sets table to 75% of window, can also use 300 for pixel width)

(NOTE: sets column width to 25% of table, can also use 100 for pixel width)

    (NOTE: aligns text in cell)

    (NOTE: aligns text in row)

    2x2 TableColumn 1Column 2
    Row 1Cell 11Cell 12
    Row 2Cell 21Cell 22

The astute will note that this is a LOT of coding for the gold nuggets of your wisdom, and we're not done yet. The problem is that this contains return on lines that don't show text in the post so you get:
(this is the first line of the table coding)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(so there is a lot of wastes space with the format like this)

    2x2 TableColumn 1Column 2
    Row 1Cell 11Cell 12
    Row 2Cell 21Cell 22
This is normally what you will get if you use a webpage editor to make the table in the "what you see is what you get" (WYSWYG for oldtimers) interface and then copy the coding.
If you reduce it all to one continuous line of code you can get a usable result:
    2x2 TableColumn 1Column 2
    Row 1Cell 11Cell 12
    Row 2Cell 21Cell 22
    But editing it is worse.
    2x2 TableColumn 1Column 2
    Row 1Cell 11Cell 12
    Row 2Cell 21Cell 22
An easy way to make simple tables is to use
and
to preserve text with spaces

2x2 table column 1 column 2
    row 1 cell 11 cell 12
    row 2 cell 21 cell 22

I prefer the keep it simple silly, or as Thoreau says "simplify"
    Enjoy.
